We The North. On Nov. 3, 1995 the NBA brought professional basketball back to the city where the first-ever NBA game was played when the Toronto Raptors hosted the New Jersey Nets at SkyDome. Today, as the only franchise outside the United States, the Raptors and their fans take great pride and appreciation in the growth of basketball across Canada over the last 28 seasons. On the court, the Raptors have experienced great success with 13 playoff appearances, seven Atlantic Division titles and their first NBA championship in 2019. The Raptors and the city also welcomed the basketball world to Toronto for the NBA All Star Weekend in 2016, cementing Toronto’s reputation as a basketball hotbed.
The Wayne and Theresa Embry Fellowship will provide two Canadians the opportunity to gain firsthand experience in a professional basketball environment over the course of a full NBA season. The Raptors commit to providing at least one of the fellowship opportunities to an individual who identifies as part of a marginalized and/or racialized group.
The fellowship consists of rotations to provide growth of knowledge and experience in all facets of an NBA team. These include: coaching, scouting, team services, player development, player wellness, medical, equipment, travel, G-League, public relations, analytics, culture and inclusion, marketing, ticketing, and NBA Draft. Each rotation will include a mentor and specific responsibilities to learn the role that each department plays within an NBA organization.
As a fellow, you may also have the opportunity to gain event operations experience at NBA Summer League and Basketball without Borders world camp held during NBA All-Star weekend. Travel and accommodations for these events will be covered as part of the Fellowship experience. The fellows will begin in June of 2024, and will receive a $40,000 CAD stipend for the year, which will be paid out semi-monthly.
The Toronto Raptors are looking for individuals who, like Wayne & Theresa Embry, demonstrate a commitment to social impact and the game of basketball. Ideal candidates are community leaders working in basketball and/or working professionals with a passion for the game.
Mr. Embry’s philosophy revolves around his eight P’s: Perseverance, Persistence, Preparation, Passion, Perception, Pride, Purpose and Performance. If you have demonstrated a commitment to these same words in your life, then this may be the opportunity for you!
