Job Description
The Hockey Research & Development Department provides information and support to all areas of hockey operations in the Toronto Maple Leafs organization including management, coaching, scouting, player development, and sports science. To support these efforts, we are hiring a Developer to help us build and support our data platform.
The Developer’s primary responsibility will be to extend, maintain, and support the use of TML’s data platform. Additionally, the Developer will analyze data to discover insights, communicate those insights to others in the organization, and contribute to various data-related projects across the organization.
Specific Duties:
- Designing, developing, and supporting the use of new and existing tools as part of TML’s data platform, including:
- Ingesting data feeds (e.g. player tracking data, scouting reports, boxscores)
- Processing data into useful metrics and presentations of those metrics
- Designing algorithms to extract useful information from large datasets
- Developing tools to enable others in the organization to explore, view, and manipulate data
- Writing and running tests
- Configuring and managing cloud infrastructure
- Working with non-developer colleagues to maximize their benefit from the platform
- Analyzing hockey data and communicating insights to others in the organization
- Collaborating on research projects
- Other hockey operations duties as assigned
Qualifications
- Python programming ability required; experience with a Python web framework is preferred
- Demonstrated experience working with large datasets (i.e. data extraction and ingestion, data processing and algorithm design, data infrastructure design and management) required; sports datasets preferred
- Degree in a technical field (e.g. computer science, science, engineering, etc.) or equivalent experience in a technical role
- Experience with machine learning-based data analysis techniques preferred
- Experience designing, building, and supporting cloud infrastructure preferred
- Experience collaborating on software projects using distributed version control
- Understanding of modern hockey statistics and analysis
- Must be able to work independently with a high degree of attention to detail
- Strong written communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills
- Ability to work evenings, weekends, and holidays as required
- Remote work available but the ability to travel to Toronto with some regularity is required
