The Machining Engineering Manager develops and improves manufacturing processes by studying product and manufacturing and machining methods, driving continuous improvement, tooling selection, tool life improvements, tool cost reductions and lean fundamentals.

Principle Responsibilities

  • The Machining Engineering Manager develops and improves manufacturing processes by studying product and manufacturing and machining methods, driving continuous improvement, tooling selection, tool life improvements, tool cost reductions and lean fundamentals.
  • Identify opportunities, prioritize, and implement changes to reduce cost, cycle time and improve the quality of all machining strategies and systems to include: machine cycle time improvements, tool life monitoring, tool life improvements, monitor production quality through CMM reports, structure of standardized work, change coordination, material floor operation readiness and all other machining processes
  • Lead 5S initiatives, Kaizen events, 6 Sigma projects and assist in the analysis and implementation of Kan-Ban systems to reduce inventories and improve overall productive capacity
  • Designs, develops, and tests the manufacturing or installation of equipment, components, and systems as it applies to equipment, plant operations, and data collection
  • Analyzes and presents data from the shop floor to improve and maintain standard work instructions, revise maintenance manuals and assist other plant engineers with upgrades/maintenance of existing facilities, equipment and other process documentation
  • Provide technical support for machining floor operations; serve as a technical liaison between product engineering, manufacturing, purchasing, quality and customer service engineering
  • Lead small projects and training to support production teams on processes and standards to improve and enhance organizational capability by initiating, developing, and implementing cost reduction projects to assist the manufacturing plant in achieving operational KPI goals
  • Adhere to all safety procedures including the use of personal protective equipment and navigating the plant with alert behavior
  • Provide engineering support for product design and process improvements to improve manufacturing efficiency, ensure product quality, and lower costs for new and existing products
  • Analyze and disposition recurring manufacturing discrepancies and interface with the quality team on root cause analysis and corrective actions
  • Create and manage manufacturing BOMs, work instructions, and specifications
  • Communicate on a daily basis with supporting departments such as production, machining, maintenance, quality, and design engineering to ensure that product is delivered on time to the correct quantities
  • Use project management skills and tools to investigate and lead projects for alternate component technologies for reduced cost or improved quality and reliability
  • All other duties assigned by management

Education/Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree, preferably in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering or another applicable engineering field
  • 5+ years of experience in a high volume production CNC environment; Experience working with high volume manufacturing assembly, ideally Automotive environment with IATF 16949 certification
  • Experience with CNC programming
  • Geometric dimension and tolerancing (GD&T) experience
  • CAD experience
  • Tooling & Fixture design experience
  • Experience selecting and optimizing cutting tools to improve process capability
  • Experience with capacity modeling, process mapping, and fault analysis
  • Experience with Lean Six Sigma or equivalent high-performance culture systems
  • Pareto analysis, root cause, and corrective action experience
  • Demonstrated success in coordinating the design and implementation of plant layout to drive results to continuously improve the manufacturing efficiency and quality, ideally with successes in tool machines layout as well as equipment and process changes
  • Subject matter expertise in Industrial Engineering & Lean Manufacturing methods, tools and techniques implemented in an ISO environment
  • Able to create mechanical and electrical drawings and other manufacturing work instructions, ideally in Solid Works 3D modelling software
  • Project leadership experience and/or project management training and knowledge
