Job Description

General job summary


The Certified Nursing Assistant works under the supervision of the Charge Nurse, Nurse Manager, and/or Director of Nursing, providing personal care to residents in a manner conducive to the residents’ comfort and safety. Certified Nursing Assistants may be called upon to help residents with getting in and out of bed, dressing, grooming, feeding, bathing, going to the bathroom, other personal hygiene. Certified Nursing Assistants will be called upon to provide basic treatments as required and directed by the nursing staff, including assistance with specimen collections, taking temperatures, and other duties. Certified Nursing Assistants are responsible for observing and reporting changes in residents’ physical and emotional conditions to the supervisors.
Employment requirements
All the following employment requirements are essential for all employees unless otherwise noted:
• Professional appearance and behavior is essential. No profanity will be tolerated at the facility.
• Hair will be tied back and away from the face, hair will be kept neat and clean.
• Aides will not be permitted to have long fingernails- fingernail must kept short and clean.
• Aides will not be permitted to wear excessive jewelry.  Aides may wear a wedding band. 
• Employees must assume accountability to data contained in the employees’ personnel handbook
• The telephone must not be used for personal conversations or messages except in an emergency.
• Employees will treat residents with the utmost respect and follow at all times Resident Rights guidelines.
• Theft and dishonesty by staff will not be tolerated.
• Time on the job should be used profitably. If work assignment is not sufficient to occupy the time, report it to your supervisor for further assignments. Sleeping on the job or eating residents’ food off the nourishment cart or from the kitchen will not be tolerated and is grounds for dismissal.
• Gossip from employees will not be tolerated. Any employee found guilty of gossip or spreading rumors shall be subject to dismissal.
• The Supervisor must authorize overtime prior to the day or at the time the overtime is worked.
• No changing of scheduled work hours will be allowed without the permission of the Charge Nurse or Supervisor (as applicable) prior to trades. Trades of hours must be in writing. The employee requesting the trade in hours is responsible to see that both shifts are covered.

Duties and responsibilities
The following is a list of duties and responsibilities for Certified Nursing Assistants. All of the job duties are considered essential unless otherwise noted:
• Must report to work on schedule. Dependability, regular attendance and punctuality are essential job requirements.
• Remain at on the assigned unit through the scheduled shift, leaving only for break, lunch, or with permission from the Charge Nurse, Nurse Manager or Director of Nursing.
• Receive the daily report and assignment from the supervisor.
• Participate in all in-service meetings and CEU’s as required.
• Help maintain a clean environment for residents, performing extra chores as required (housekeeping/laundry, bed making, etc.).
• Help maintain a safe environment for residents, abiding by safety rules, performing accident-free work, and following procedures for safe lifting and transfer of residents.
• Transport residents to support services or areas.
• Bathe or assist residents in bathing (bed bath, tub, shower, or whirlpool).
• Perform or assist residents with personal grooming needs (shaving, hair care, nail care, oral hygiene, denture care, skin care, and cosmetics).
• Assist residents in dressing and undressing as needed in clothing appropriate to the time of day and season of the year.
• Assist residents in caring for and securing personal articles, labeling clothing, etc.
• Change bed linen.
• Assist residents in before- and after-meal routine (wash hands and face, transport to and from dining area, prepare bedside environment for in-room dining).
• Provide prompt meal-time assistance (check diet card for accuracy, position tray for resident convenience, help with cutting food, buttering bread, pouring liquids, etc.).
• Provide partial or total feeding assistance and encouragement as needed.
• Report appetite changes and request substitutions when necessary.
• Record observations on meal intake record.
• Provide adequate hydration (offer fluids frequently, record intake as directed, etc.).
• Provide between-meal nourishment when indicated (distribute supplemental nourishment as assigned, provide assistance as needed, accurately record and report intake of nourishment).
• Assist residents in all elimination needs (bedpan, urinal, bathroom assistance, etc.).
• Participate in facility incontinence program.
• Perform perineal care after each episode of incontinence.
• Perform catheter care per facility policy.
• Record bowel habits and urine outputs as directed.
• Collect specimens as directed.
• Reposition residents at times and in a manner as instructed or as determined by care plans.
• Assist residents in transferring from bed, chair, wheelchair, toilet, etc., using appropriate equipment and following principles of body mechanics (determine number of persons for assist, use gait belt, hoyer lift, grab bar, etc.).
• If needed, assist residents in exercise (active/passive range of motion, ambulation, etc.) as indicated by supervisor and individual care plan.
• Help restore independence through teaching and encouragement in ADL skills (eating, dressing, ambulating, toileting, etc.).
• Help prevent complications of decubitus and contractures by proper placement of positioning aids, protective padding, etc.
• Provide good personal care to residents as directed by the Charge Nurse, implementing the nursing care program.
• Observe, report to the Charge Nurse, and accurately chart, as required, unusual occurrences and changes in a residents condition.
• Assist with accurate and complete records by completing daily charting as required.
• Conduct self as a competent member of the health care team
• Model behaviors that reflect continued personal and professional growth.
• Carry out and follow all facility personnel guidelines
• Be familiar with department procedure manuals.  Follow facility guidelines and procedures when performing duties.
• Perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor.
 

Qualifications

High school graduate or equivalent is preferred. A 75-hour state or federally approved nurse aide course is a requirement. Certification may be completed after employment begins.  The Nurse Aide course must be completed within four (4) months of employment.
Continuing education requirement
All Certified Nursing Assistants are required to complete annual 12-hour in-service training programs. Failure to complete the 12-hour in-service training program, or any other requirement under local, state, or federal law, will result in suspension without pay or termination.
Work experience
Previous health-related experience preferred, but not necessary. Extensive on-the-job training is provided.

• Be able to promote and maintain the highest level of independence in the resident
