Job Description

Lumotive is seeking an experienced and creative Principal Mechanical Engineer to build the next generation of innovative 3D sensors.  This position will conceive, design, develop and bring to production lidar sensors that will revolutionize the self-driving, automation and AR/VR industries.   This role will include frequent multi-disciplinary collaboration with the optics, hardware and industrial design teams.  Additionally, the Principal Mechanical Engineer will lead the mechanical systems and thermal design to achieve low-cost, high-volume manufacturing.   This position reports to the Senior Director of Engineering.

 Responsibilities

  • Lead the mechanical engineering portion of product design from prototype through high-volume production for different focused applications (consumer electronics, automotive, etc.)
  • Use strong analytical problem-solving skills and statistical tools and techniques as needed during the product design process
  • Oversee and solve issues related to materials and thermal management
  • Product Design for Manufacturability (DFM), Design for Assembly (DFA), statistical tolerance analysis techniques, functional dimensioning and geometric tolerancing
  • Oversee mechanical rapid prototyping and 3D printing
  • Work with materials and in machine shop and with prototype assembly as needed
  • Design & testing products for high temperature, high shock/vibe environments
  • Oversee and lead domestic and overseas outsourced manufacturers
  • Oversee mechanical design constraints for products (like camera modules, optics, semiconductor devices, etc.), thermal solutions (vapor chambers, heat pipes, heat fin design, etc.) and interconnects (ACF, FPC, custom connectors, etc.)
  • Be a proactive and self-motivated leader with a cross-collaboration mindset and the passion to take on and solve difficult challenges to develop breakthrough technology

Qualifications

  • Previous experience as a Principal Mechanical Engineer Senior Mechanical Engineer, Electronics Packaging Engineer, DFM Engineer, DFA Engineer or related title 
  • BS in mechanical engineering or related field, advanced degree preferred) with multiple years of industry experience taking a product into high volume production
  • Proficient with Mechanical 3D CAD/PDM/PLM software such as Solidworks
  • Experience dealing with thermal, vibration, shock, contamination and related issues
  • Experience with machining, fabrication and soft tooling processes
  • Experience creating complete design/documentation for production  
  • Ability to work in a multi-disciplinary team setting to carry a design from concept to manufacturing
  • Ability to prototype and oversee the outsourced development of models in order to evaluate new concepts and reduce risk
  • Ability to prepare and deliver reports and presentationsAble to organize design reviews and lead technical discussions
  • Good working knowledge of DFM, FMEA, FEA and geometric tolerancing
