Job Description

Overall Purpose and Objective of Position

This position requires an individual that can operate a skid steer tractor in a hopper barge to remove product unreachable by the Heyl Patterson barge Unloader.

Primary Responsibilities/Essential Functions

· Mastery of the safe operational capabilities of a skid steer tractor working in a hopper barge simultaneously with the Heyl Patterson barge Unloader discharging grain and grain by-products. · Operator must have sufficient ability to operate the skid steer tractor safely and productively in all conditions including high / low river conditions and inclement weather. · Operator must understand the overall barge unloading process sufficiently to perform duties as directed by the Unloader operator. · Operator must understand the operation of the tractor hoist system and winch systems necessary to raise and lower ladders for access to and egress from hopper barges. · Operator must possess a full understanding of the clean-up process including the periods that the tractor must work in relatively close proximity to the Heyl Patterson barge Unloader. · Operator must possess the ability to recognize and identify the various grains and grain by-products. If during the course of unloading a barge the tractor operator encounters out of condition grain, wet floors, mixed grain or any other condition not consistent with normal grain conditions it must be communicated immediately to the Unloader operator. · Operator must possess the ability to communicate the operational status of the skid steer tractor to maintenance personnel. Further, the operator must have sufficient knowledge of the skid steer tractor to recognize deficiencies in the equipment and communicate those deficiencies to the maintenance group. · Operators must complete daily operations reports for each skid steer tractor used. · Operator must take an active role in recognizing excessive emissions from the barge Unloader or ship loading spouts and notifying the Unloader operator. · Operator must fully recognize hazards associated with a barge unloading operation and take appropriate steps to ensure they and all personnel working in the barge unloading operation adhere to safe operating rules and policies.

Qualifications

Education/Professional Certifications/Licenses

Basic qualifications:

· High School Diploma/GED

· Valid Driver’s License

· Ability to obtain TWIC card

Experience

Basic qualifications:

· Knowledge of proper operation of skid steer as well as safety standards.

Preferred qualifications:

· 1 to 2 years in a marine terminal barge unloading operation recommended.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities (including any physical demands)

The following are basic qualifications:

· Demonstrable proficiency in operating a skid steer tractor in a barge clean-up operation.

· Must be able to climb stairs, ladders and walk extended distances up inclines.

· Must have ability to work from ladders and platforms at heights above 6’.

· Be able to lift a minimum of 50 lbs.

· Must be able to work in dusty conditions.

· Must be able to work frequently in inclement weather.

· Must be aware and attentive to surroundings, which may include automatically starting conveyor belts, other moving machinery, overhead loads and vessel gangways on the dock.

· Must ensure environmental equipment for the unloading operation is functioning properly at all times.

Additional Information

Position may require cross training as cover handlers to meet possible operational demands. · Regular attendance at safety meetings and training sessions as directed by the General Superintendent. · Know and understand duties and responsibilities in the event of an emergency evacuation or man overboard emergency.

Equipment Used

Use of proper personal protective equipment including fall protection as necessary required at all times as well as personnel protective equipment normally associated with a marine operation.

Working Conditions

Requires frequent extensions of regular working hours, including nights, weekends and holidays, often with little or short notice.

Requires walking/working outdoors, alternating between climate controlled areas and areas with varying temperatures and in various weather conditions

Employee Supervision

Functional lead responsibilities for the riverside barge unloading crewmembers.
