Job Description

Longbridge is currently searching for a Controller to join our Finance Team. The Controller will be a senior leader on the finance team, working closely with business leadership and finance teams on accounting functions, ensuring sound business controls and financial reporting processes. The Controller manages all financial reporting, coordinating the annual financial audit and advising on financial performance, key financial metrics and the effect of issues/regulations on strategies, objectives and financial statement presentation. The scope of responsibility also includes leading and coordinating projects to continuously improve the financial control, process and analytical decision support Infrastructure of the Company, as well as "event­driven" initiatives and other key projects.

Essential Job Functions and Basic Duties:

  • Manage and direct financial statement close, review and preparation process to ensure accurate and timely financial reporting in line with all GAAP, FASB, SEC, and investor requirements, including balance sheet, income statement and statement of cash flow.
  • Oversee indirectly all day-to-day accounting, reporting, and tax functions including, Corporate Accounting, Accounts Payable, Incentive Compensation, Staff Accountants, Tax, Technical Accounting, and cash flow planning and ensure availability of funds as needed, including warehouse and buyout facilities.
  • Manage the preparation of accurate and timely financial statements and reports for annual, quarterly, and periodic reporting requirements, including financial statements, footnotes and Management's Discussion and Analysis. Manage and continuously improve the company-wide accounting / consolidation close process to ensure accurate accounting in an efficient and timely manner.
  • Manage the preparation of internal financial statements and collaborate on the preparation of management reports and related analyses for use by the executive management team and other constituents including, but not limited to, reviewing the preparation of actual variances versus financial budget and forecasts.
  • Continuously engage with IA/SOX teams to ensure proper internal controls exist within accounting division and implement changes as necessary.
  • Ensure the Company maintains compliance with all financial covenants and/or requirements.
  • Prepare Board relevant information on a monthly and quarterly basis, including Audit Committee materials, and proactively communicate to the SVP when material problems need to be brought to their attention or there are risks of potential problems in the future.
  • Coordinate with Internal Audit to ensure that effective internal controls are in place and ensure compliance with GAAP and applicable federal, state and local regulatory laws and rules for financial and tax reporting. In conjunction with Internal Audit, lead corporate and divisional Sarbanes-Oxley compliance efforts; maintain systems and controls that verify the integrity of all systems, processes and financial data.
  • Act as liaison to Senior Management and Parent (Ellington) on SEC reporting process and interaction with external parties as needed.
  • Manage issues of diverse scope where analysis of situation or data requires evaluation of a variety of factors, including an understanding of current industry, economic, and business trends. Apply operational standards, processes, and policies to select the appropriate approach to derive solutions to complex problems. Act as advisor to subordinate(s) to meet schedules and/or resolve the more technical accounting problems. Develop and administer schedules, performance requirements, and all accounting control functions.
  • Consult with the other senior leaders on financial regulatory requirements, and stay abreast of regulatory and accounting pronouncements that will affect the company's financial statements and position
  • Keep the SVP of Finance and Accounting, and other senior leaders informed of financial conditions, activities, and trends on a proactive and ongoing basis.
  • Foster and maintain an ongoing strong relationship with external auditors that focuses on continuous improvement, communication, and productive engagement.
  • As a direct report to the SVP of Finance and Accounting, work with Parent Company (Ellington) to prepare for earnings releases and ongoing dialog with Parent Company.
  • Lead the continued build-out of an excellent corporate accounting team to ensure high-quality execution of responsibilities and bench strength for future leadership within the accounting and finance functions. This includes quality external hiring as needed and guiding the professional development of the team through individual objectives and career development and training plans to meet the current and future needs of the organization.
  • Oversee the performance of the corporate and operations accounting functions (and corresponding accounting teams) to ensure the successful and timely completion of the month-end close process for the organization.
  • Proactively develop relationships with Longbridge business unit heads, operational staff, and finance leaders to ensure financial reporting and other corporate policies are enforced and best practices are continually implemented and maintained. Align and activates resources to resolve issues or take advantage of opportunities arising from organizational change.
  • Monitor and assess current trends and emerging developments within the field and practice of accounting to ensure the company's compliance and preparedness.
  • Complete additional special projects as assigned and resources permit.
  • Review technical accounting documentation and assist with additional preparation as necessary, including interaction with outside consultants.
  • Develop close relationship with outside tax experts, ensuring controls over all tax compliance, reporting and payments.
  • Ensure data integrity and accuracy with all financial data.
  • Work cross functionally with FP&A and Treasury on forecasting, technical accounting tasks and Board materials and external reporting as necessary.
  • Ensure regulatory compliance with all state and federal requirements as it relates to incentive compensation, accounts payable, expense reimbursements and other related matters.
  • Manage all accounting processes and procedures, ensuring proper documentation, internal controls, and continual focus on efficiency.
  • Oversee any state or investor related audits as it relates to accounting and treasury. Work cross functionally with Compliance to ensure regulatory changes are implemented as necessary.
  • Hire, train and develop management to build teams as necessary.

 

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications, Education and Experience:

  • A bachelor's degree in accounting, Business, Finance, or a related field.  An active CPA license is preferred.
  • 10+ years relevant experience with consolidating business units, with a public company or equivalent combination of education and experience; preferred candidates will have strong mortgage experience.
  • Experience evolving and/or managing Accounting functions. Experience at a company that transitioned from a private to a public company is a plus.
  • Strong leadership skills, with a demonstrated ability to hire, manage, train, and grow a team.
  • Ability to work within a fast-paced, dynamic environment, managing and adapting to multiple urgent priorities.
  • Ability to work well with others and thrive in a collaborative environment.
  • Prior management/supervisory experience required.
  • Extensive knowledge of US GAAP, FASB and SEC reporting regulations.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong analytical and critical thinking skills, including the ability to evaluate facts and data to draw conclusions.
