Locus Robotics is a leader in the rapidly growing eCommerce order fulfillment optimization space. Our solution helps warehouse owners attain 2-3X efficiency improvement over cart-picking operations, by empowering pickers to work collaboratively with our robots. All this is accomplished while integrating with the operator’s Warehouse Management System, utilizing, and optimizing existing facility infrastructure.

Locus Robotics is developing a family of autonomous mobile robots (AMRs) to increase efficiency in warehouse goods management.  We seek a Senior Mechanical Engineer to support current robot and accessory development. This position will report through the Customer and Continuation Engineering group of Hardware Engineering. The candidate must be capable of a great deal of autonomy with respect to designing, fabricating, and testing new designs, as well as launching new products into production and supporting systems fielded at customer sites. Managing technical progress at contract manufacturers and their suppliers will be involved as well.

Job Description

  • Take inputs from customers (both internal and external) and generate sub-system requirements.
  • Utilize a set of requirements to design elegant solutions both quickly and carefully, independently preempting issues of manufacturability and future maintenance.
  • Design, model, and detail draft elements of an autonomous mobile robot & supporting accessories using PTC Creo and SolidWorks.
  • Evaluate designs for strength and stiffness and long life, including fatigue analysis of static components and the life of bearings or gears
  • Design components and systems that reduce assembly effort; work with the operations team to verify these approaches and incorporate their feedback
  • Design individual components that can be manufactured in high volume at low cost while meeting functional requirements
  • Proactively engage with suppliers to determine competitive manufacturing strategies for new and existing designs.
  • Work with manufacturing and procurement teams inside Locus Robotics to meet development and production timelines
  • Develop test plans for validation of designs
  • Accurately document work and present to peers, customers, and leadership through design reviews.

Qualifications

  • B.S.M.E / M.S.M.E
  • 10+ years’ experience designing mechanical and electromechanical products
  • Experience with custom machined parts
  • Experience with the design of thermoplastic components for volume production
  • Experience with the design of metallic components for volume production
  • Experience in the design of sheet metal
  • Experience developing tolerance stack analyses
  • Familiarity with DFA practices
  • The ability to interpret and apply GD&T
  • Experience with prototype methods to accelerate design cycles
  • Experience with requirements development and evaluation against the same
  • Experience with risk analysis techniques, e.g. “What-if” or FMEA techniques
  • Excellent team player, with a hands-on approach and collaborative attitude
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills

This role is a hybrid role with a requirement to work part-time in our US-based Locus offices
