Job Description

Position Summary:

The Overture Maps Foundation is seeking a Community Manager to help us build and nurture relationships across our growing ecosystem of users and contributors. This position focuses on understanding and addressing the needs of the diverse ecosystem of users who engage with Overture's open data, schema, and GERS capabilities. You will work closely with various internal teams to ensure the community's voice is heard and represented while helping to foster a vibrant, collaborative ecosystem around open map data.

A dedicated Community Manager is essential for Overture Maps to:

  • Foster meaningful discussions and knowledge sharing across our ecosystem

  • Ensure community needs and feedback are effectively communicated to internal teams

  • Support the growth of a vibrant, collaborative open data community spanning technical and non-technical users

  • Execute strategic initiatives that advance adoption of Overture's data and tools across varied skill levels

  • Build bridges between different user communities to encourage collaboration and innovation

  • Administer programs that fund and showcase innovative uses of Overture data

Key Responsibilities:

  • Strategy & Planning:

    • Provide overall strategy, objectives, and marketing plans for community development and engagement.
    • Define and track key performance indicators (KPIs) for community growth, engagement, and adoption of Overture data and GERS framework.
    • Interpret analytics results and provide strategic recommendations.
  • Community Engagement:

    • Define and lead the community engagement strategy and priorities.
    • Lead member communications and identify success stories within the community.
    • Approve strategy for scheduling webinars, meetups, and virtual events.
    • Establish effective channels for gathering feedback from users across the ecosystem
    • Manage community feedback collection and synthesize for product and engineering teams
    • Plan and coordinate brown bag sessions, office hours, community calls, and webinars
    • Monitor and triage community questions across GitHub discussions forums and issues, Slack, and social media
    • Create and maintain community-focused content including blog posts, case studies, and technical documentation for varied technical skill levels
    • Collaborate with researchers, developers, and data practitioners to highlight innovative uses of Overture data and tools
  • Member Onboarding & Support

    • Design and implement comprehensive onboarding programs for new foundation members and community participants
    • Create clear pathways for different types of community involvement (technical contributors, data providers, end users)
    • Provide guidance and support to help new members navigate foundation processes and technical resources
    • Develop self-service resources and documentation to streamline the onboarding experience
  • Communications & Content

    • Develop content strategies that communicate technical concepts clearly, promote adoption, and community engagement.
    • Develop and maintain consistent, compelling messaging across all community touchpoints
    • Create and curate content including newsletters, blog posts, social media updates, and community announcements
    • Coordinate with marketing and communications teams on social media strategy, user-focused messaging, and a community newsletter
    • Coordinate with marketing and technical teams to ensure accurate and accessible communication of technical concepts
    • Maintain community documentation, FAQs, and resource libraries
  • Event Planning & Execution

    • Plan, organize, and execute community events including conferences, workshops, webinars, and meetups
    • Coordinate both virtual and in-person events, managing logistics, speaker coordination, and attendee experience
    • Develop event programming that serves diverse community needs and skill levels
    • Manage event budgets, vendor relationships, and cross-functional coordination
    • Evaluate event success and iterate on programming based on community feedback
    • Maintain a “DA toolkit” GitHub repository with talk topics and workshop materials
    • Execute on-site event presence including booth management, demo coordination, and lead capture
    • Track event ROI through registration metrics, community sign-ups, and qualitative feedback
    • Represent Overture Maps at industry and developer conferences worldwide
  • Website & Digital Presence:

    • Provide and approve major website updates and define content direction.
    • Approve design, content, and major updates for the website.
  • Creative & Design:

    • Provide direction and approve visual assets, branding, and messaging use.

  • Internal Communications & Coordination:

    • Lead cross-team updates, manage onboarding, and internal information sharing.
    • Set priorities for documentation and follow-up activities.

Qualifications

  • Proven experience in community development, developer relations, or a similar role, preferably within a technical or open-source environment.
  • Strong understanding of geospatial data, mapping technologies, or related fields.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to define messaging and tone effectively.
  • Demonstrated ability to build and nurture authentic community relationships.
  • Strategic thinker with the ability to define objectives and interpret data.
  • Experience collaborating with marketing teams and leveraging their support for execution.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and projects simultaneously.
  • Self-motivated and able to work independently.

Additional Information

Location & Travel

This position can be performed remotely, with occasional travel for key community events and foundation meetings (approximately 15-20% travel).
