Job Description

We are looking for a program manager to join our Standards and Specifications team. In this role, you will help guide and support the success of standards and specifications projects  through strategic analysis and project management. This is an individual contributor role, with a heavy emphasis on operational excellence and business management. In this role, you will partner heavily with stakeholders across internal and external organizations.

The Linux Foundation’s Standards and Specifications team work at the intersection of open source and standardization, helping projects adopt modern, developer/implementer friendly practices while adhering to high levels of due process and IPR management. Our team are experts in the unique needs and concerns of specification development, working with communities to reach their goals under a vendor neutral home. 

This position is a remote, virtual, position and reports to the VP of Standards. In a typical year, overnight and weekend travel to events both domestically and internationally (approximately 1-4 times per year) will be required. This role will likely require air travel.

Qualifications

Core Responsibilities

Standards Program Manager responsibilities spread across strategic, operational, and tactical areas:

Strategic

  • Prioritize project operational needs and escalate concerns as necessary to the appropriate responsible parties. 
  • Advise on open standards, open source, and Linux Foundation best practices, and help projects adopt best practices and guidelines pragmatically.
  • Facilitate forward momentum on the project’s scope and vision by managing discussions and expectations with project working groups, members, and other stakeholders.

Operational

  • Be the Glue — serve the project as a center of activity and communication, ensuring forward, timely progress on strategic goals through increased communication and cross-functional collaboration.
  • Be the Resource — be the project’s resident expert on matters of governance and process as it pertains to standardization, and help with new initiatives, version releases, and other efforts that move the project forward.
  • Be the Planner — help the project maintain accurate project plans, with realistic work-back and resourcing plans to get the job done.

Tactical

  • Handle back-end operations for the project, managing tasks such as invoice approvals, collecting IP agreements, contracting, new member management, and more.
  • Oversee the specification advancement process, handling exceptions, notices, and review processes as needed or appropriate. 
  • Handle, or oversee the handling of, project administration tasks such as implementation of LFX tooling, creation and distribution of meeting materials, and roster management. 
  • Drive the annual budgeting process and complete monthly audits and reporting for the project in tandem with Finance.

Desired Experience

Required

  • 3+ years proven experience in a program management role, focused on aligning multiple external and internal organizations and stakeholders.
  • Very strong project management, written, and oral communication skills - you can clearly develop and articulate plans through written documentation and meeting presentations.
  • Very strong time management skills - you manage your time wisely, and make good judgements on the time and effort necessary to complete tasks.
  • High executive function - you are able to balance competing priorities and are comfortable working in ambiguous situations.
  • Sound judgment - you how to work collaboratively across functions such as Marketing, Public Relations, Legal, and Finance, and when to bring in additional people and resources.
  • High emotional intelligence - you remain professional and focused working with a diverse and dynamic community. 
  • The ability to work globally, taking meetings across multiple time zones as necessary.

Preferred

  • Experience working with or at standards developing organizations and/or association management organizations.
  • Experience working with global, remote teams. 
  • Experience working in a consultative role, e.g. client services, customer support, or other outward facing position(s).
  • Experience working with one or more parts of a software or hardware development lifecycle, either as an engineer, developer, project manager, community manager, or other. 
  • Direct experience with open standards and/or open source software and communities.
