Job Description

The Cloud Native Computing Foundation (CNCF) is seeking a proven technology leader to help grow and support the global CNCF community of 140+ open source projects and 800+ member companies that share the mission in making cloud native computing ubiquitous across the world. The CNCF is dedicated to the goal of building a culturally diverse and pluralistic community committed to working in a multicultural environment and strongly encourages applications from underrepresented groups and women.

We are looking for an experienced technologist with outstanding managerial skills to partner with the CTO and CNCF executive team to drive critical and complex projects by providing technical leadership, managing resources, engaging community and ecosystem partners, and owning the cross-organizational delivery of technology commitments. In this position, you will be a dynamic player-coach for CNCF technical staff members, improving productivity while safeguarding the team's health and supporting them to enable the CNCF’s continued community-led growth. 

Both hands-on and strategic, the ideal candidate will be directly engaged in building technical and operational focus, efficiency, and performance. You will champion the delivery of a maintainer-first experience by prioritizing technology platforms, processes, programs, and initiatives that foster open source collaboration at industry scale.

Responsibilities:

  • Support the CTO in developing and implementing the CNCF technology strategy
  • Manage CNCF technical staff and functions, including the CNCF projects team, program managers, software developers, developer advocates, technical writers, service desk, and technical contractors
  • Drive quarterly OKRs around the goals of CNCF technology strategy
  • Partner with the CNCF executive team and colleagues across the organization to deliver their objectives
  • Participate in CNCF Technical Oversight Committee (TOC) and support Technical Advisory Group (TAG) meetings
  • Provide oversight for strategic technology programs, including Certified Kubernetes Conformance, Kubernetes Infrastructure, and Telco/Cloud Native Certification programs
  • Partner with LF IT and contractors as needed to drive CNCF cloud and IT infrastructure engineering, implementation, administration, governance, and management
  • Ensure that the infrastructure and applications of the CNCF are fit-for-purpose, performant, secure, and scalable to meet the needs of our organization and projects today and in the future
  • Ensure excellent maintainer satisfaction and contributor services on a global basis
  • Continuously assess and identify gaps in technology project operations and propose and implement solutions
  • Be accountable for the technical assurance of 3rd party infrastructure platforms and services, while always ensuring we maximize value for money
  • Ensure effective use of the time and skills of the technical staff, empowering the team to gain clarity about their activities, deliverables, and contributions to advancing the organization’s goals
  • Build, grow, and support a world class team through recruiting, coaching, training, development, and performance management

Qualifications

  • 5+ years of experience working with open source projects and communities
  • 5+ years of engineering team management experience demonstrated by providing technical guidance, support, and best practices to deliver complex projects
  • 5+ years hands-on experience with modern best engineering practices for the full software development life cycle, including code review, source control, build, test, deploy, and operations
  • Strong working knowledge of CNCF projects, technologies, governance, and processes
  • Experience architecting or setting up cloud infrastructure is required, and experience deploying to multi-cloud environments (e.g., AWS, Azure, and GCP) is preferred
  • IT support experience is preferred
  • Experience in project management advantageous to ensure timely deliverables

  • Comfortable engaging directly with a range of internal and external stakeholders, including high-level corporate executives
  • Outstanding organizational, communication, and relationship building skills conducive to driving consensus
  • Ability to successfully partner with all functional areas across CNCF member organizations
  • Ability to keep a flexible schedule: CNCF staff is spread across US, EU, and Asia. This position requires you to be willing to adjust schedules to collaborate with people when necessary
  • Travel up to 10%, including internationally, to be part of and attend events
