Job Description

As a community and marketing leader for open source projects at The Linux Foundation, you will be pivotal in representing one of our fastest growing and critical initiatives: Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning. 

You can think of the Linux Foundation as a greenhouse growing and sustaining open source AI / ML projects from seed to fruition. We provide a home to some of the world’s largest and most critical projects for open AI/ML development among a diverse and thriving community. We support these communities with a number of enabling services that include membership and funding management, ecosystem development, legal support, PR, marketing, communications, events support, trademark management, export control filings, and compliance scans. 

This role provides an incredible opportunity to be the marketing and community leader for a massive, fast-growing open source software community. You’ll be responsible for developing the marketing strategies for the community and leading its execution throughout the year. Your marketing plan will encompass a combination of activities that support integrated campaigns that leverage community engagement, content development, virtual and live events, PR/communications, social media, web/landing pages, account-based marketing (ABM), and conversational 

marketing. You won’t be alone in this effort, as you’ll be supported by an expert team of marketing pros that enable our automated demand gen tools, deliver creative services, manage event venues and logistics, and provide analytics and reporting. You will also be responsible for leading the community’s marketing committee, defining strategies and executing programs to grow developer engagement and education. 

Marketing activities at the Linux Foundation help expand awareness of incredible innovations that our community builds together. New and amazing stories of innovation, creativity, and community come to us every week. Your marketing expertise will also help drive more engagement in developer communities, spread knowledge of cool new releases, drive participation at regional and national events, and encourage training and certification on new technologies. We also provide marketing to support our popular mentorship programs in the community. As the head of the marketing committee where our member firms for this project gather, you’ll help them gain visibility to various working groups, initiatives, case studies, and promotional opportunities to engage with us and their industry peers. 

This position is for a senior individual contributor, who will manage our AI / ML foundation marketing budget, manage shared marketing resources to achieve the foundation’s goals, and define the overall community and marketing engagement strategy. This leader will be supported by a strong, well-established team of marketing experts across

numerous disciplines with access to many of the industry’s most modern and automated MarTech stacks. The position will report directly to our VP of Marketing over all Projects at the Linux Foundation. 

Responsibilities: 

  • Be the marketing and community leader for a well-known, rapidly growing AI/ML open source project and its community. In this role you will not only lead marketing but you’ll represent marketing’s subject matter expertise in this technology space. 
  • Build and execute, quarterly + annual community and marketing plans that include integrated campaigns, events, content, and communications 
  • Work with the Foundation GM and LF execs to plan the AI/ML marketing budget, including people, programs, events, contractors, and internal marketing service costs. 
  • Coordinate integrated launch plans with technical product marketing, docs & tutorials, communications teams. 
  • Develop agenda and content for monthly marketing committee meetings. Lead meeting and communicate outcomes. 
  • Develop clear and engaging content that is consistent with the Foundation’s brand image and addresses both business goals and community needs. Content includes case studies, videos, digital promotions, newsletters, blogs, social media, and web copy. 
  • Coordinate Ecosystem Tools project review & submission process. Work directly with the submitters to develop content and visibility plans. 
  • Optimize our AI/ML community’s use of the LFX platform to improve management, insights, and communication. Leverage LFX platform components including: Insights, Project Control Center, Security, and Organizational Dashboard 
  • Work with Foundation General Manager and LF events team to develop the annual AI/ML community conference. Help improve the LF’s AI/ML presence and participation at industry and academic events, coordinating efforts with the Foundation’s member companies. 
  • Collaborate with the Foundation’s PR & Communications leader to develop campaigns and media relations strategies to increase paid, earned, and owned media coverage. 
  • Work with LF Marketing experts to assess community engagement, online traffic, and digital content, to optimize SEO/SEM and improve brand awareness. 
  • ]Work with the LF Demand Gen team to monitor, track and analyze the performance of marketing activities and channels to optimize results.

  • Plan and organize attendance + participation for AI/ML user conferences, industry, and academic events
  • Manage online presence for the project including web properties, developer sites, and social media channels

Qualifications

  • 10+ years of marketing experience in B2B business, preferably in open source or software businesses 
  • Experience managing communication to B2B communities related to open source or Ai/ML will differentiate you as a candidate. 
  • Ability to interface at all levels maintaining strong working relationships across cross-functional teams.
