Job Description

We are in need of a talented content writer and editor to create compelling stories about our members, projects, engineers, and the power of open-source software. We’re looking for someone who will help us expand our digital footprint and drive more value for our communities and members through online content including blog posts, social media content, use cases, and an annual report. The ideal candidate should have a proven track record of story mining and producing thought leadership pieces that increase engagement and drive visibility. This position requires a high level of creativity, as well as the ability to use data-driven insights to write better material. The successful candidate should also be detail-oriented and committed to meeting tight deadlines. Preference will be given to those with a strong writing portfolio, bachelor’s degree, and relevant work experience, particularly in open source communities.

Objectives

  • Editor of the Linux Foundation blog and Linux.com
    • Create and manage the editorial calendar for our LF blog properties
    • Collaborate with other leaders at the LF and in our project communities to create innovative story ideas and maintain an editorial calendar for the year
    • Manage and monitor the performance of each property and establish plans to improve awareness, readership, and subscriptions to the content; Analyze content marketing metrics and make changes as needed.
    • Create themes with associated content, and marketing campaigns, partnering with our digital marketing team to drive leads, subscribers, and traffic to our LF and project communities’ web properties
    • Understand which content is resonating most with our readership and adjust the editorial calendar accordingly
    • Plan editorial calendar to include and highlight major industry and global news stories that the LF should have a voice into
    • Enable an editorial calendar that can take advantage of late-breaking industry and LF news
    • Edit stories, headlines, teasers and other copy for spelling, grammar, punctuation, style, tone and SEO best practices.
    • Collaborate with staff to brainstorm content topics
  • Original short-form content development
    • Serve as a technical writer for blogs covering open source technologies across the LF and our community
    • Draw out insights from our project communities and members through surveys and interviews with internal/external thought leaders, using those insights to develop engaging content and thought leadership
    • Regularly produce various content types, including articles for publication on LF owned sites. Support those articles with social media posts through organic - and occasionally paid - promotions.
    • Look for and pursue opportunities to post LF content on third-party sites to increase awareness and readership.
  • Original long-form content development
    • Use content and insights produced over the year to develop content for an LF Annual Report.
    • Drive the overall theme, content, assembly, editing, publication, and promotional efforts for the Annual Report.
    • Collaborate with Project leaders and marketers to develop the content required to represent the complete LF story
  • Third-party content development
    • Review, fact check, and copy edit content developed by others
    • Engage Project Marketing leads and other internal thought leaders to produce content
    • that can be published on LF owned properties. This content may have been published previously on LF Project blog sites.
    • Engage third-party writing resources - paid or free - to produce content that can be shared as original or ghost-written content on LF owned properties.

Qualifications

  • Excellent writing skills, as well as the ability to communicate and collaborate effectively
  • Minimum of 10 years experience implementing successful content marketing strategies for businesses and non-profit organizations
  • Knowledge and perspective on the unique value of engineers and maintainers who contribute to open source projects, and how open source relates to both the technology industry and vertical segments reliant on open technology
  • Bachelor’s degree in English or experience in journalism or related field
  • Strong KPI skills and evaluation, ie. Google Analytics, etc.

  • Experience with WordPress, hubSpot and SEO best practices.
  • Experience writing for a B2B audience
