OS-Climate Platform Technical Program Manager (Contract)

  • Contract

Company Description

The world runs on open source, and projects need more than a version or source control system to scale. The Linux Foundation has evolved a proven methodology to transform projects into category leaders. LFX operationalizes this approach, providing a suite of tools built to facilitate every aspect of open source development. Critical projects must have their finger on the pulse of their entire developer ecosystem, with tools tailored to key stakeholders driving project development, including maintainers, contributors, community managers, marketers, and more.

OS-Climate (OS-C) http://www.os-climate.org/ is a new Linux Foundation umbrella project developing a breakthrough solution for rapidly scaling up investment and finance for climate change solutions, and rapidly transitioning away from unsustainable companies and projects to close the $1.2 trillion annual funding gap needed to avoid catastrophic impacts to the environment, the economy, and society.

OS-Climate’s members include some of the largest financial sector and tech sector companies.  BNP Paribas, Goldman Sachs, and KPMG are Premium Members.  Other initial Founding Members include Allianz, Amazon, Federated Hermes, London Stock Exchange Group, Microsoft, the Net Zero Asset Owner Alliance, Ortec Finance, and S&P Global.  Red Hat IBM is contributing a 9-person tech team. OS-C’s Planning Team includes WWF, Ceres, and SASB.  Our partners include some of the most influential organizations and institutions in the climate finance space globally -- NGOs, think tanks, academic and government institutions, etc.

Job Description

OS-Climate is seeking a contractor, starting as soon as possible for a period of 12 months, to serve as Technical Program Manager. The person in this highly visible role will have the opportunity to lead world-class data scientists, modelers, developers, and subject matter experts in building out the OS-Climate platform.  OS-Climate is starting out in a consortium-like approach among its members, developing initial kernels of platform components until they are ready to open up as regular open source projects (with the aim to start this transition in Q4 2021).

  • The Program Manager will oversee all of the OS-C Platform Development projects and workstreams. Presents to the Governing Board and Technical Advisory Council as needed.  They are ultimately responsible for the success of all the interconnected projects and workstreams.

  • In collaboration with KPMG, establish an improved Platform Management framework for tracking, managing, and reporting on all projects and workstreams, including a Gantt Chart and a dashboard of key planning and execution metrics.

  • For the period when OS-Climate Platform Development is only or primarily open only to Members and selected Partners (at least through November 2021), champion and foster a culture of accountability and effective project & program management practices, keeping in mind that Member-led workstreams will apply approaches familiar to Member project managers, but ensuring these are integrated with the overall Platform Management framework. Be a facilitator and motivator, working across Members (and sometimes with Partners) to ensure collaboration, communication, visibility, and successful delivery of projects and workstreams. Note: as OS-Climate transitions to a more typical open LF project model, a culture of accountability will be much harder to foster and enforce.

  • Provide effective direction to workstream leads to deliver and meet Platform Development objectives. Work with workstream leads to ensure they have clear project plans and workstream management frameworks in place, have identified all workstream dependencies and are engaging effectively with the other relevant workstream leads on managing interdependencies.

  • Help workstream leaders in problem-solving to address blockers, and identify early any needs for elevating an issue.

  • Where a given priority workstream is not yet well structured, work with Core Team and Members to scope the workstream needs, get workstream leadership in place, and then project planning and management. In some instances, the Program Manager will need to assume a workstream project management role temporarily until one of the Members is able to contribute that resource ─ such as for Corporate Counterparty Data Collection, Natural Language Processing, and ETL workstreams.

  • Where additional contract resources are required, help develop job specifications and vet candidates.

  • Experience in coaching and mentoring Agile teams while  fostering a collaborative environment where team members feel empowered to make decisions and are enabled.

Qualifications

  • 10 plus years experience leading complex customer facing programs with many different stakeholders.

  • PMP Certification and recent relevant project management experience required.

  • Experience in Agile practices is a must, and demonstrated experience in coaching and leading several agile teams is key to being successful in the role.

  • A background in the financial service sector and / or working with technology platforms which deal with large datasets is a major plus.

  • Being able to work with C-Suite executives and demonstrated ability to gain consensus and alignment in a matrixed environment is key.

  • A passion for combating climate change goes without saying; familiarity with ESG is a plus.

  • Candidates must be located in time zones between from Pacific Daylight Time (UTC - 7) and Central European Summer Time (UTC = 2) with preference for Eastern Daylight time (UTC - 4).  Preference for candidates in the Raleigh-Durham area, and willingness to periodically work on-site with the OS-Climate core team (although primarily working remotely).
