Job Description
We are seeking a highly accomplished Engineering Manager to lead the development of scalable, secure, and resilient backend platforms built on Java and AWS. This is a pivotal, hands‑on leadership position that blends deep technical expertise with strong people management and delivery oversight. The successful candidate will guide a cross‑functional engineering team, champion high engineering standards, and ensure that solutions are robust, efficient, and aligned with strategic business objectives.
In this role, you will work closely with Product Owners and key stakeholders across the organisation to drive clarity, prioritisation, and effective delivery. You will also play an essential part in coaching, mentoring, and developing engineers at all career stages, fostering a high‑performing, collaborative, and growth‑oriented team culture.
What you'll be doing:
- Leading a high‑performing cross‑functional team of engineers, business analysts, and test engineers, fostering a collaborative, inclusive, and growth‑focused environment
- Providing technical leadership across Java‑based microservices (Spring Boot) and AWS platforms, ensuring solutions are scalable, secure, observable, and aligned with architectural standards
- Guiding the delivery of clean, maintainable, and business‑aligned solutions by promoting sound engineering principles and high-quality outputs
- Owning end‑to‑end delivery, working closely with Product Owners to refine requirements, prioritise effectively, and ensure consistent, high‑quality outcome
- Driving the technical debt strategy to maintain resilient, reliable systems capable of supporting long‑term performance and scalability
- Defining and embedding effective testing practices, including test‑driven development and the testing pyramid, to ensure quality, security, and usability
- Overseeing code reviews to ensure functional and non‑functional requirements such as performance, resilience, security, and maintainability are consistently met
- Driving continuous improvement by enhancing delivery processes, strengthening engineering maturity, supporting team wellbeing, and mentoring engineers at all levels
Who we're looking for:
- Strong experience in backend engineering using Java and Spring Boot, with a proven track record delivering microservices in large‑scale commercial environments
- Proven expertise designing and orchestrating workflows with AWS Step Functions, including integration across distributed systems and AWS services
- Deep understanding of modern architecture patterns, including RESTful and event‑driven microservices, alongside clean code principles such as SOLID and hexagonal architecture
- Hands‑on experience with AWS services (e.g., Lambda, ECS/EKS, S3, RDS, EventBridge, SNS/SQS) and containerisation technologies such as Docker
- Experience leading engineering teams, providing coaching, mentoring, and performance support across a range of seniority levels
- Strong knowledge of testing and quality assurance practices, including TDD, automated testing, CI/CD pipelines, and Agile delivery frameworks
- Ability to design secure, observable, and scalable systems, with a solid grasp of non‑functional requirements including performance, resilience, and security
- Experience tackling complex engineering challenges through effective debugging, root cause analysis, and decision‑making that balances short‑term delivery needs with long‑term sustainability
Whatever your role, we reward performance and behaviour with a package that looks after all the things that are important to you. Here are some of the benefits we offer:
- The opportunity to participate in our annual, performance -related bonus plan and valuable share schemes
- Generous pension contribution
- Life assurance
- Healthcare Plan (permanent employees only)
- At least 25 days holiday, plus public holidays, 26 days after 2 years’ service. There’s also the option to buy and sell holiday
- Competitive family leave
- Participate in our electric car scheme, which offers employees the option to hire a brand-new electric car through tax efficient salary sacrifice (permanent employees only)
- There are the many discounts we offer – both for our own products and at a range of high street stores and online
- We’re creating net‑zero carbon workplaces by 2030 by investing in our sustainable, modern offices across the UK, all designed to bring people together and elevate the in‑person experience
