Job Description
We’re seeking a Software Developer to play a key role in designing, developing, and delivering high-quality IT solutions for Legal & General’s Group Protection systems within the Retail Division. This is a collaborative role within the LG Retail IT team, where you’ll work closely with architects, project managers, business analysts, test teams, strategic software partners, and infrastructure providers.
Your focus will be on creating well-documented, technically sound solutions that drive meaningful outcomes for our business and customers.
What you'll be doing:
- Designing, developing, documenting, and deploying software components that deliver high-quality, fit-for-purpose solutions aligned with IT strategy and integrated into Legal & General’s existing architecture
- Supporting all phases of the software development lifecycle—from design and build through testing, deployment, and warranty—to ensure smooth and reliable delivery
- Assisting in the analysis and resolution of live environment issues, contributing to the stability and performance of production systems.
- Collaborating with Enterprise Application Designers, Solution Architects, Developers, and wider IT and Change teams to ensure solutions are well-designed, thoroughly tested, and successfully delivered
- Liaising with third-party software and infrastructure providers to review and challenge technical designs, coding estimates, and delivery timelines, ensuring solutions meet both functional and non-functional requirements
- Maintaining accurate technical documentation and ensuring knowledge is shared across teams to safeguard Legal & General’s intellectual property
- Driving secure development practices by embedding data protection and security reviews into every stage of the development process
- Partnering with Service Management to refine system metrics and continuously improve user experience and service performance, always keeping the customer at the heart of every solution
Qualifications
Who we're looking for:
- Developing robust e-commerce applications using Java/J2EE, with beneficial experience in frameworks and tools such as Spring (MVC, Dependency Injection, Data Access), HTML5, CSS3, JavaScript, JQuery, and IBM WebSphere
- Integrating applications across diverse platforms and data sources, including mainframe, mid-range, SOA, and ESB technologies, to ensure seamless interoperability
- Applying strong knowledge of database technologies (DB2, Oracle, SQL Server), data warehousing tools (e.g. Business Objects, SAS), and enterprise content management systems to support scalable solutions
- Implementing secure development practices with awareness of IT security standards (e.g. OWASP, WS-Security) and infrastructure components such as SAN, networking, Wintel, Linux, and zOS
- Collaborating within Agile (SAFe, Scrum) and Waterfall environments, with familiarity in ITIL, TOGAF, and PRINCE2 frameworks to support structured and adaptive delivery
- Leading distributed and multicultural teams, including offshore service providers, with experience managing tasks and projects in large corporate environments
- Demonstrating strong communication skills, intercultural awareness, and adaptability—combining analytical thinking with creative problem-solving to navigate complex IT architectures
- Understanding Legal & General’s business strategy, technology standards, and regulatory landscape, ensuring alignment between technical solutions and strategic business outcomes
