Job Description

The Merchandise Planner is responsible for setting up inventory plans by category that aligns with the topline strategic goals of the company.


1. Financial Objectives 

  • Sales plan
  • G.M. plan
  • Inventory turn

2. Planning

  • Plans upcoming season by department and class in QuickPlan including sales, gross margin, markdowns and inventory flow based on history & future strategies to maximize sales & profitability.
  • Creates and manages assortment plans by month to achieve profit targets working in collaboration with Category Managers.
  • Prepares size analysis once updated by Allocation Analyst.

3. Business Management

  • Creates ad hoc reports to help analyze business.
  • Attends bi-weekly meetings with Category Managers to review OTB.
  • Forecasts sales, markdowns and flow on a monthly basis, by department and class.
  • Analyzes past performance and current business by supplier/class/attributes to maximize sales and G.M. for future seasons monthly and quarterly.
  • Creates unit flowcharts for key replenishment styles to maintain proper inventory.
  • Identifies potential issues/opportunities (inventory levels, product selection, etc.) on a proactive basis and reacts quickly to resolve or capitalize on them.
  • Works in collaboration with Planning and Allocation Manager to identify opportunities and misses (ie. fabric analysis, color analysis, fit analysis, etc.).
  • Reviews style performance on a weekly basis.
  • Reviews store inventory with Allocation Analyst to provide recommendations and course of action to ensure optimum inventory levels in store and flags issues to Planning and Allocation Manager.


  • Bachelor Degree in Business Administration / Commerce or other related specialty is an asset.
  • Minimum 5 years planning or analysis related industry experience
  • Strong computer skills – especially Excel
  • Strong analytical skills – ability to analyze & quantify data
  • Strong communication & negotiation skills
  • Strong prioritization & organizational skills
