Job Description

La Scuola seeks an experienced Design teacher to lead IB-MYP Design in Grades 6 - 8 and IB-PYP Elementary Education Technology in grades K - 5 for the upcoming school year. 

The ideal candidate will be a lifelong learner with an innovative mindset, a wide range of technical skills in product and/or digital design, and a track record of encouraging and supporting students to pursue their individual and unique interests and make transdisciplinary connections in design and related fields. The individual will model and promote the IB learner profile and teach across a range of ages and abilities.

Middle School IB-MYP Design Teacher & Curriculum Developer

Position Overview

The role of IB-MYP Design Teacher & Curriculum Developer is to develop curriculum consistent with the MYP Design Subject Guide and design of units of inquiry relating to technology and design. This position supports and implements the daily program in accordance with the policies and philosophy of the School under the supervision and direction of the Division Director and the Head of School.  Description is subject to change without notice as the School's needs may require.

  • Teach MYP Design courses in Grades 6, 7, 8.
  • Create a written curriculum: Plan Design units of inquiry in platform i.e., Toddle.
  • Assess students according to the requirements of the MYP Design Subject Guide, and maintain a gradebook in Toddle.
  • Seek ways to take learning outside the classroom; identify opportunities and take advantage of resources to contextualize learning locally, regionally, and/or globally.
  • Collaborate closely with the Atelierista, the Pedagogical Leadership team, the IB-Coordinator, faculty, the Technology Coordinator, and IT Systems Administrator
  • Identify trends in software, curriculum, teaching strategies, and other educational areas and select appropriate educational software/hardware to enrich learning

Designing, planning & implementing appropriate curriculum goals and long-term projects within the IB-MYP guidelines, including but not limited to:

  • Creating a flexible program and class environment favorable to individualized learning and personal growth.
  • Using structured purposeful inquiry as the leading vehicle for learning.
  • Teaching all subjects in both Italian and English as appropriate.
  • Balancing the needs of students with different Italian and English language skills.
  • Using technology to enhance learning.

Setting educational and developmental goals for the children, both as a group and individually, including but not limited to:

  • Establishing a personal connection with each student
  • Striving to understand each child’s individual temperament and evolving developmental level/needs.
  •  Supporting each child’s social, emotional, academic, language, cognitive, and physical development within the context of La Scuola's Reggio Emilia inspired “pedagogy of relationships.”
  • Encouraging positive social interactions among children and guiding children towards more appropriate behavior.
  • Participating in and supporting the school’s positive behavior policy and general ethos of respect for all.
  • Promoting international-mindedness and encouraging students “to become active, compassionate, and lifelong learners who understand that other people, with their differences, can also be right.”
  • Balancing the necessity of classroom rules and norms with the need to respond to specific individuals appropriately (i.e., balance the needs of the group with the needs of the individual).
  •  Incorporating each child’s current needs into planning for the overall group curriculum/ activities.
  • Assessing each child’s progress frequently and accurately throughout the year.
  • Assessing the group dynamic on an ongoing basis, as well as individual academic progress toward group and individual goals as required.
  • Reporting on students’ progress along the continuum and as compared with the learning outcomes and IB PYP Scope & sequence.

Preparing the environment (indoor and outdoor) so as to support the educational objectives/goals including, but not limited to:

  • Maintaining a provocative and thoughtful environment to support the Reggio Emilia inspired learning goals.
  • Following classroom environment guidelines and La Scuola high standards in maintaining an aesthetically pleasing and beautiful classroom
  • Making the learning process visible through documentation of children’s work
  • Providing different activities, materials and projects on a weekly basis.

Establishing and maintaining a personal connection with each parent, child's family, including:

  • Understanding the family needs, styles and priorities for their child in the school.
  • Conducting professional and insightful parent/teacher conferences (assess children ahead of time, pinpoint areas of concern, if any, and have all written materials prepared and printed out prior to the conference).
  • Communicating individual and group accomplishments and projects (interests, pursuits) in a timely manner through conversations, newsletters, and other documentation
  • Greeting the parents upon arrival and relating something positive that happened to their child in the program when possible upon departure.

Communicating with parents

  • Providing a weekly document/newsletter describing classroom activities/ inquiry is required. This effective communication between La Scuola’s staff and with parents is of central importance.  This document will explain why the described activities/projects are chosen and what children are learning through them.  This document will be in line with the Reggio Emilia approach to documentation and making learning visible.

IB-PYP Elementary Education Technology Teacher

Position Overview

The objective of this role is to provide students with a stimulating, challenging and joyful  learning experience both in and beyond the classroom. Individual will work to enable all students to learn effectively and provide support for the needs of the students, supporting the aims and values of the School at all times.

The role and responsibilities will include but are not limited to the following:

  • Develop curriculum consistent with the Reggio Emilia Approach and Research and PYP Technology Scope & Sequence and responsible for the support of curricular issues and design of units of inquiry relating to hands-on maker projects, coding & robotics, and other emerging technologies (both hands on and virtual)
  • Design, source and lead instruction in classrooms following a schedule developed with the pedagogical leadership.
  • Work with faculty, staff members, and students to enhance concept-based learning, hands on & virtual instruction and extend transdisciplinary learning through the effective use of materials and technology in the classroom including various hardware, software and Internet resources.  In the PYP, understanding tools - our earliest technology - their purpose, performance and risks is essential.
  • Create and provide learning resources for faculty and staff, including web sites, tutorials, and interactive programs that support technology integration throughout the school and Atelier spaces.  Teachers will be guided and encouraged to develop their own resources, while the Maker Design Technology Coordinator will support these efforts by providing additional support as needed.
  • Assess students according to the requirements of the PYP Scope & Sequence
  • Collaborate closely with the Atelierista, the Pedagogical Leadership team, the PYP Coordinator, faculty, the Technology Committee, and IT Systems Administrator
  • Identify trends in maker movement, curriculum, teaching strategies, and other educational areas and select appropriate educational materials, equipment, software/hardware to enrich learning

Qualifications

Qualifications Required:

  • Bachelor‘s degree and above from an accredited college or university in education or related field.
  • IB-MYP & IB-PYP experience preferred
  • Minimum of two years teaching in a classroom environment.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with all staff and colleagues.
  • Organized, flexible disposition, and high adaptation skills to work successfully in an unpredictable school and culture setting
  • Organization and communication skills.
  • Native-like fluency in Italian in preferred

Must be authorized to work in the U.S.

La Scuola may be able to offer a teachers exchange visa for 3 years, for teachers with a BA in Education / Pedagogy / teaching credentials in their country of origin AND a MINIMUM of two years of teaching experience in a primary/elementary school.

Prior to beginning work and as a condition of employment in order to comply with the law, all employees must provide documentation to prove eligibility to work in the United States.

In addition, the final candidate will need to pass both Criminal Justice Department and Federal Bureau of Investigation Fingerprint Clearance and a physical exam, and provide a recent copy of a negative TB test and other immunization records.

Estimated annual salary range: $62,400 to $126,697 depending on credentials, qualifications and experience.
