Pay Range

$132,810.00  - $170,556.00  Annually for the SES.2 level
$159,330.00  - $204,636.00  Annually for the SES.3 level

Please note that the pay range information is a general guideline only. Many factors are taken into consideration when setting starting pay including education, experience, the external labor market, and internal equity.

Job Description

We have an opening for an F5 Network and Systems Administrator. You will provide technical layer 7 application support and systems administration for information systems existing in a heterogeneous private cloud environment to solve a variety of moderately complex technical problems. This position is in the Enterprise Infrastructure Services (EIS) Division within the Computing Directorate, supporting the Livermore Information Technology (LivIT) program.

This position will be filled at either the SES.2 or SES.3 level depending on your qualifications. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if you are selected at the higher level.

Business needs dictate that this position requires an on-site presence multiple days a week. Therefore, telecommuting options will be limited.

In this role you will

  • Manage a private cloud application load-balancing service that spans three NNSA sites to provide global and local layer-7 high availability, and application security services to enterprise applications, collaboration tool suites, databases, mission applications, services, servers, and core infrastructure componentry.
  • Collaborate with application and service owners to help architect highly available and secure application/service load-balancing solutions and application infrastructures.
  • Collaborate with program network & security engineers to ensure the F5 configurations remain consistent with the global network architecture and security posture.
  • Leverage orchestration/automation utilities (e.g. F5 BigIQ, AS3, Ansible, etc.) for distributing and enforcing standard configurations, supporting patching, and upgrading new software and configuration changes across multiple sites.
  • Provide systems administration support in both Linux and Windows server environments in support of ensuring proper security compliance, patch level, and adherence to our configuration management standards.
  • Collaborate with management, customers, and team members to evaluate and recommend procurements of hardware and software in support of stipulated system requirements.
  • Enforce security and systems administration policy requirements such as vulnerability remediation, and system build standards.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Additional responsibilities at the at the SES.3 Level

  • Manage multiple advanced parallel tasks and priorities of customers and stakeholders to ensure deadlines are met, while leveraging other team members’ skills.
  • Apply in-depth technical expertise to solve complex technical problems and develop solutions using judgment in determining methods, techniques, and evaluation criteria.
  • Develop tools and procedures to facilitate complex automation efforts as well as cross-platform/environment monitoring solutions.

Qualifications

  • Ability to obtain and maintain a US DOE Q-level security clearance which requires U.S. Citizenship. 
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Business Administration with a concentration in Computer - Information Systems, or related field; or the equivalent combination of education and related work experience.
  • Broad, multi-year experience in architecting, designing, and operationally managing enterprise F5 BigIP application load-balancing services across sites in support of stringent SLA agreements that require high availability.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of and experience performing Linux and/or Windows O/S systems administration in a complex environment; including tasks such as O/S installation, layered product installation and configuration, performance tuning, networking, security policy enforcement, troubleshooting, monitoring, backup/archiving, and hardware management.
  • Proficient, hands-on experience with technologies such as: Splunk and/or other SIEM tools, Tenable Security Scanner and /or other security scanning tools, patch management tools such as WSUS and/or RHEL Satellite, Ansible, Puppet, Chef or equivalent automation/orchestration, Dynatrace and/or SCOM monitoring, RHEL 8+ and/or Windows Server 2019+ O/S administration, AWS or Azure cloud services.
  • Broad experience interacting with computer security personnel to provide input to computer security plans, ensuring computer security compliance, monitoring systems for general health, security incidents, and other events, and developing security configurations that meet cyber requirements.
  • Comprehensive analytical skills necessary to analyze moderately complex systems and networks.
  • Proficient verbal and written communication skills necessary to effectively collaborate in a team environment and present and explain technical information.
  • Ability to work on a 24x7 on-call rotational schedule.

Additional qualifications at the SES.3 Level  

  • Advanced knowledge of and significant experience in the above technical services, concepts, or constructs.
  • Significant experience with applying security baselines/configuration standards (CIS, STIGs or equivalent)
  • Professional Certifications and/or Training (e.g., F5 BigIP, VMware VCA or VCP-DCV, CompTIA A+, RedHat RHCSA, Ansible, AWS).
