We have an opening for a Research Scientist to conduct experimental radiochemistry R&D in support of the Stockpile Stewardship and post-detonation Technical Nuclear Forensic programs. The successful candidate will lead the development of novel radiochemical separation techniques using microfluidic platforms for nuclear forensics. This will include developing systems tailored towards rapid separation of radionuclides from various matrices, producing radioisotopes using neutron and charge-particle irradiation methods, and advancing accurate measurement techniques for radiochemical measurement in microfluidic devices. This position is in the Nuclear and Radiochemistry Group within the Nuclear and Chemical Sciences Division.
In this role you will:
- Lead a collaborative research effort to develop novel experimental methods, separation techniques, and analysis approaches needed for radiochemical measurements in micro-systems.
- Conduct research to advance new capabilities in automated chemistry analysis of post-detonation debris.
- Develop experimental methods, separation techniques, and analysis approaches needed to collect and isolate radioactive isotopes produced at accelerator and reactor facilities.
- Develop new and enhance existing analytical methods and instrumentation for radiochemical analysis, including radiation measurement for samples relevant to nuclear explosions.
- Collaborate with multi-disciplinary teams of scientists and engineers.
- Communicate results to internal and external audiences ranging from peers to sponsoring organizations via written technical reports and presentations in a timely manner.
- Write research proposals relevant to programs and sponsors with the goal of solving key issues.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. DOE Q-level security clearance which requires U.S. citizenship.
- PhD in radiochemistry, chemistry, physics, geochemistry, or nuclear engineering, or the equivalent combination of education and related experience.
- Significant experience and ability to lead a project in collaboration with multi-disciplinary team across the DOE laboratory system.
- Significant experience and ability to deliver on milestones in a timely manner.
- Experience and advanced knowledge in designing, assembling, and running nuclear science experiments based on radiochemical or nuclear chemistry methods.
- Ability to safely work with radioactive materials (> 1 microCurie).
- Ability to develop experimental methods, separation techniques, and analysis approaches needed to perform radiochemical measurements of unique samples.
- Ability to develop and lead independent research projects as demonstrated through publication of peer-reviewed literature or equivalent classified research documents.
- Advanced verbal and written communications skills necessary to work in a multidisciplinary team environment, author technical and scientific reports and publications, and deliver scientific presentations.
