Job Description
The Sr. EH&S Engineer is a Senior level position that will work closely with the Global Head of EH&S and site leadership team to develop and implement environmental, health, safety and industrial/occupational hygiene compliance programs, initiatives, procedures and trainings, promoting state-of-the-art safe and healthful work practices for the protection of personnel, and the environment. Examines operations to recognize and evaluate occupational exposure to chemical and physical agents; recommends and coordinates engineering and administrative controls to reduce hazards/risk and limit occupational exposure. Maintain hazardous materials program which includes chemical, and hazardous materials inventory management and reporting, waste service contractor management, and incident management. Leads collaborative Safety Committee Team in completing required periodic testing, addressing escalated concerns, and empowering team to assist with engaging all staff to keep safety at the forefront
Based at the company’s site in Petaluma, the Sr. EHS Engineer is responsible for development and implementation of Safety, Environmental and Emergency Management programs at the company’s two facilities in Petaluma and Novato, CA.
Roles and Responsibilities:
- Identify legal and other compliance requirements and develop and implement systems to ensure sustainable compliance with those requirements.
- Serve as a subject matter expert for health and safety programs including but not limited to IIPP, LOTO, electrical safety, industrial hygiene, chemical handling, waste management, respiratory protection, and PPE.
- Provide strategic support to stakeholders to reduce safety risks to staff and improve safety awareness and culture.
- Lead and support the local site team in the development and implementation of EHS programs including, but not limited to: IIPP, HMBP, HAZCOM, EAP, SOPs, LOTO, Confined Space Programs, Fire Prevention Programs, Industrial Hygiene, Lab Safety, Hot Works Program, Contractors’ Safety, Chemical Inventory and Hazardous Waste Management and Minimization.
- Lead the implementation of ergonomic risk assessments, equipment safety risk assessments, and develop job safety analysis for automated and manual job functions.
- Perform routine EHS assessments and gap analysis to identify program specific deficiencies and areas of risk.

- Develop a safety auditing and inspection system to detect existing or potential incident and health hazards, decide corrective or preventative measures where indicated, and follow up the efficacy of the implemented mitigation measures.
- Review and analyze accident reports and trends to ensure proper action is initiated to prevent the re-occurrence.
- Keep SDS master file up to date, identify new chemicals susceptible to be reported and develop a system to keep both sites in compliance with EPCRA, TSCA, EPA, Cal/OSHA….
- Assist with regulatory compliance and reporting to the permitting authorities.
- Lead investigation of incidents, conduct root cause analysis when required and follow up the implementation of corrective actions.
- Support external and internal compliance audits, or other third party EHS related inspections
- Support project and facilities management in the design and revisions of existing facilities and operations to assure proper EHS considerations are in place. Implement a change management system.
- Lead the employee Safety Committee
- Coach and mentor EHS coordinator.
- Develop and maintain effective safety communications.
- This is a site-based role.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Engineering, Operations, Industrial Hygiene, Safety, Business Administration, or other related fields
- Demonstrated industry experience developing and implementing EHS programs in a biotech or chemical manufacturing organization, with preferred emphasis in the regulated life sciences (e.g. in vitro diagnostics, pharmaceutical, or medical device)
- 8 or more years’ progressive experience in occupational Environmental, Health, and Safety roles in a biotech or industrial manufacturing environment.
- Proven ability to effectively provide technical guidance on complex initiatives to achieve business goals
- Proven knowledge and experience in EHS Programs, Emergency Response, Risk Management and Change Management
- Must have a proven record of demonstrating problem solving skills and developing solutions to produce deliverables and meet timelines
- Ability to work with people at all levels of organization, as well as with outside agencies
- Excellent presentation, oral and written communication skills
- Process oriented, via a detailed, logical, analytical approach
- Highly organized, with the ability to analyze data and implement solutions
- Adaptable to change and evolving tasks, while managing and prioritizing multiple tasks within a dynamic work environment
- Strong computer skills required, including working knowledge of Microsoft Office suite of products, particularly MS Teams, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Professional certification such as a Certified Safety Professional (CSP), Hazardous Material Manager, or other relevant certification.
- Experience working with various EHS governing organizations: Environmental Protections Agency (EPA), California Occupational Safety and Health (Cal-OSHA), California Air Resources Board (CARB), CUPA (Certified Unified Program Agency), and/or California Department of Public Health (CDPH)

- Ability to lift 40 lbs.
- Driving license and vehicle to travel between the two sites, Petaluma and Novato. Must access to a reliable personal vehicle for work-relate travel. Mileage reimbursement provided per applicable law.
Additional Information
The typical pay range for this role is:
Minimum: $115,000 USD
Maximum: $200,000 USD
This range represents the low and high end of the anticipated salary range for the California based position. The actual base salary will depend on several factors such as: experience, skills, and location.
This position is eligible for a discretionary bonus program. Participation in the bonus program is not guaranteed, and bonuses are awarded at the discretion of the company based on individual and company performance results.
