Job Description

The Facilities and Exhibits Technician is responsible for supporting the Exhibits Department in the maintenance and repair of exhibits and facilities components. Responsibilities include participating in preventative maintenance necessary for optimum functioning of exhibits and facilities , troubleshooting and repair of exhibits and facilities, opening and closing of the facility and exhibits, and supporting other departments with the set up and take down of furniture and equipment for events and programs.

Maintain, upgrade, and repair all exhibits and facilities elements of the Science Center through the use and implementation of various components including carpentry, electronic, audio/visual/computer, mechanical, hydraulic, and pneumatic.  This includes preventative maintenance, repair, and sometimes fabrication of exhibits, facility elements, and equipment. 

Perform opening rounds and accurately document exhibit/facility status; ensure all exhibits are operational before the Science Center opens to the public; shut down exhibits and facility after closing when needed.

Proactively identify exhibits and facility issues, troubleshoot and resolve issues in a timely manner in order to ensure safety and operational integrity of the Science Center’s activities. 

Maintain a clean, safe work environment by demonstrating a thorough knowledge of tools and equipment or being ready and willing to receive training on tools and equipment; follow proper safety procedures associated with each tool/equipment/material.

Maintain accurate work records within the work order system. 

Work in collaboration with other departments, and provide support as needed, to set up and take down aspects of all Science Center activities, including rentals, programs, fundraising events, special events, exhibit and film openings, and membership events. 

Collaborate with staff to develop and fabricate program support props and equipment. 

Assist with the opening and lock-up of the facility, and with deliveries as needed.

Respond to visitor inquiries in a pleasant, accurate and accommodating manner.

Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Experience or interest in carpentry, construction, property or facilities maintenance, or general making and fixing things. Experience can be in a professional of hobby capacity.

Previous experience in a customer service-oriented environment preferred.

Schedule with weekend availability. Occasional evening, early morning, and some holiday availability.

Experience in some or all of the following: electronics, audio/visual/computers, mechanics (think complicated Rube Goldberg rather than car mechanics), hydraulics, plumbing, carpentry, tools and methods. 

Ability to walk/stand for extended periods, climb, stoop, lift up to 50 lbs., operate scissor lifts, pallet trucks, and other material handling equipment.

Able to work independently using good problem solving, judgment, and communication skills.

Familiarity with safe use of shop tools and equipment including, but not limited to table saw, band saw, drill press, and various small power and hand tools. Training provided.

Ability to work with a variety of materials, including wood, plastics, metal, and laminate preferred. Training provided.

Basic computer skills and familiarity with the Microsoft Office Suite applications preferred. Computer drafting experience a plus.

Ability to work as a team member with all Science Center staff and volunteers.

18 or older

Must pass a criminal background check

• Full time, non-exempt, 40 hours per week.
