Job Description

Job Overview

The Kentucky Science Center is seeking seasonal Camp Teachers with an enthusiasm to “Do Science!” for our Summer 2022 School’s Out Science Camp program. As a Camp Teacher you will ensure that campers experience a stimulating and fun learning environment at the Kentucky Science Center. You will facilitate all lesson plans and lesson extensions (provided by the Kentucky Science Center) for a class of up to 25 students. You will exercise the engineering design process, inquiry-based learning, Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS), and other best practices in conjuncture with the provided curricula. Additionally, you will provide professional development opportunities for and guidance to camp counselors and all volunteers in the classroom.

Areas of Concentration:        

Front Line- Facilitating Science-Based Curriculum Activities with Campers from ages Pre-K-8th grade: (60%)
Front Line- Facilitating and Maintaining Camper Safety within the Kentucky Science Center Exhibits: (30%)
Front Line-Communicating with Camp Parents: (10%)

 

Responsibilities: 

  • Use a provided curriculum to facilitate lessons with campers on a multitude of science subjects.
  • Help students understand and utilize the engineering process within  NGSS.
  • Maintain a safe and fun learning environment while in and outside of the classroom.
  • Modeling best engineering practices in exhibits, field trip opportunities, and any partnerships.
  • Foster an inclusive classroom environment.
  • Deliver/adapt activities for campers with a spectrum of ability levels.
  • Manage classroom materials throughout the week.
  • Preparation of classroom and cleaning of classroom.
  • Assist with health and safety of the campers by evaluating and treating minor incidents and informing Camp Staff Leads of any incidents.
  • Follow all COVID-19 safety protocols as given to you by the Kentucky Science Center to ensure the health and safety of campers and fellow staff members.

Compensation

Starting at $14/hour when teaching

Qualifications

  • Must be available to work a full-day camp setting, five days a week. Camp HoursWeekdays: 8:30-5:00, May 27-August 5, 2022.
  • Teachers are NOT required to commit to all 10 weeks of camp but are required to commit to a FULL WEEK of work (Mon-Fri). Prefer applicants who can commit to at least 4 weeks of camp.
  • If selected, Camp Teachers are required to attend an Orientation May 8 & May 22, 2022.
  • College Graduate or pursuing a degree with emphasis in education or other science related discipline. Preferred current Teaching Certificate.
  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Must provide proof of COVID-19 vaccination or valid request of exemption submitted through Human Resources. 
  • Working experience with Pre-K through middle school students (Pre K-8).
  • Excellent communication and organization skills with an enthusiastic and flexible attitude.
  • Ability to stand/walk for long periods of time and lift up to 25 pounds.
  • Must pass a criminal background check.
  • Ability to work comfortably with the public of all ages and backgrounds.
  • Must have a desire to work in a fast-paced camp environment and have an enthusiasm for working with children with the ability to adapt to changing situation and react calmly under pressure.
  • May be called up to perform other camp responsibilities as needed.
  • Applicant must be comfortable communicating with parents on a daily basis.
  • Understanding of engineering process and basic scientific principles.
  • Ability to motivate and inspire others, especially children of all ages.
  •  Ability to work comfortably with science equipment, multimedia/instructional technology, and safety procedures.

All Camp Teachers are eligible for 50% off the regular price of each week of summer camp (a $150 savings). Camp Teachers who complete at least four weeks of camp will also receive a Family Membership to Kentucky Science Center good through the end of 2022.
