Job Description

Job Overview

The Kentucky Science Center is seeking seasonal Camp Counselors for our Summer 2022 School’s Out Science Camp program. As a Camp Counselor you will ensure that campers experience a stimulating and fun learning environment at the Kentucky Science Center in the classroom, while in our exhibits, and on any field trips. You will assist Teachers with lesson plans and activities, help maintain a safe and functional classroom, and work closely with children of all ages. We are seeking patient, dependable, high energy individuals with an enthusiastic “Do Science!” attitude.

Reports to: Camps and Family Programs Coordinator

Areas of Concentration:        

Front Line- Assisting Camp Teachers with Science-Based Activities and maintaining a positive classroom: (50%)
Front Line- Engaging with Campers and helping to Maintain Camper Safety within the Kentucky Science Center Exhibits: (30%)
Front Line-Communicating with Camp Parents: (20%)

Responsibilities: 

  • Help Camp Teachers provide a safe instructional environment in and outside of the classroom.
  • Assist campers with activities and material preparation in groups or individually.
  • Assist the teacher in classroom preparation and cleaning.
  • Assist with health and safety of the campers by evaluating and treating minor incidents and informing Camp Staff Leads of any incidents.
  • Assist with registration and other daily duties per Camp Staff Leads.
  • Assist with pulling supplies and preparation of classrooms.
  • Communicate with parents, visitors, and non-camp staff.
  • Follow all COVID-19 safety protocols as given to you by the Kentucky Science Center to ensure the health and safety of campers and fellow staff members.

Compensation

Starting at $13/hour

Qualifications

  • Must be available to work a full-day camp setting, five days a week. Weekdays: 7:50-4:20 or 8:30-5:00, May 27 – August 5, 2021
  • Counselors are NOT required to commit to all 10 weeks of camp but are required to commit to a FULL WEEK of work (Mon-Fri). Prefer applicants who can commit to at least 4 weeks of camp.
  • If selected, Camp Counselors are required to attend orientation May 8 & May 22, 2022.
  • At least 18 years of age.
  • Must provide proof of COVID-19 vaccination or valid request of exemption submitted through Human Resources. 
  • Pursuing a College Degree or other certified post-secondary program in education, the sciences, the arts, or technology.
  • Working experience with elementary age children, preferably in a recreational setting.
  • Excellent communication and organization skills with an enthusiastic and flexible attitude
  • Ability to stand/walk for long periods of time and lift up to 25 pounds.
  • Must pass a criminal background check.
  • Ability to work comfortably with the public of all ages and backgrounds.
  • Must have a desire to work in a fast-paced camp environment and have an enthusiasm for working with children with the ability to adapt to changing situation and react calmly under pressure.
  • Applicant must be comfortable communicating with parents on a daily basis.
  • Ability to motivate and inspire others, especially children of all ages.

All Camp Counselors are eligible for 50% off the regular price of each week of summer camp (a $150 savings). Camp Counselors who complete at least four weeks of camp will also receive a Family Membership to Kentucky Science Center good through the end of 2022.
