Job Description

The Grounds and Maintenance employee is responsible for maintaining the cleanliness, safety, and aesthetic appeal of the school grounds and outdoor facilities. This role ensures that all outdoor areas are well-kept, providing a welcoming environment conducive to learning and community engagement.​

Key Responsibilities

  • Mow, edge, and trim lawns, fields, and other grassy areas; prune trees, shrubs, and hedges to maintain health and appearance; plant, fertilize, and water flowers, trees, and shrubs as needed.
  • Remove weeds, debris, and litter from school grounds; maintain walkways, driveways, and parking areas, ensuring they are free of hazards; assist in the maintenance and repair of irrigation systems.
  • Operate and maintain groundskeeping equipment such as mowers, trimmers, blowers, and other tools; perform routine maintenance on equipment to ensure optimal operation.
  • Apply pesticides, herbicides, and fertilizers per safety guidelines and regulations; ensure all tasks are performed safely, using appropriate protective equipment and following established protocols.
  • Prepare grounds for seasonal changes, including snow and ice removal during winter; assist with setup and teardown for outdoor school events and activities.

This description outlines the position's primary duties; however, custodial and maintenance staff may be required to perform other job-related tasks as directed by a supervisor to ensure smooth school operations.

Qualifications

Education: High school diploma or equivalent preferred.

Experience: Previous experience in grounds maintenance or landscaping is advantageous.

  • Must pass state and federal background checks, including fingerprinting and child maltreatment registry checks.
  • Ability to operate and maintain groundskeeping equipment; knowledge of landscaping techniques and plant care.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to safety.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Ability to perform physically demanding tasks, including lifting up to 50 pounds, bending, stooping, and standing for extended periods.
  • Capable of working outdoors in various weather conditions.

Additional Information

The Grounds and Maintenance wages will be based on individual experience and within the SY 2025-26 Salary Schedule.
