Job Description

Position Overview 

The school nurse's primary role is to support student learning by functioning as the health care provider in the school setting.

The KSL school nurse provides the following:

  • Utilize the Nursing process components of assessment, diagnosis, outcomes identification, planning implementation, and evaluation to care for all children during the school day.

  • Care of chronic illness and the prevention of illness.

  • Ensure proper administration, storage, and inventory of prescription and nonprescription medications.

  • Regular communication with parents including the request for medication refills to ensure students always have medication on hand.

  • Create and maintain individual healthcare plans each school year for students with medical concerns. (e.g. asthma, seizure disorders, diabetes, etc.) Conduct annual Hearing and vision screens

  • Create and Update Medical 504 plans for students with health care concerns that require classroom accommodations.

  • Update and document the electronic record (PowerSchool) student's current immunization record.

  • Promotes an optimal level of health for students and staff.

  • Promotes sound health care practices within the school and community.

  • Serves as a link between health care providers, families, staff, and community agencies. 

  • Record Keeping and compliance with all state health regulations and requirements including reporting immunization status to the region and state.

  • Serve as a member of the enrollment team ensuring all scholars have up-to-date immunizations on the first day of school.

KIPP School Nurses perform duties in a manner consistent with professional standards, the State Nurse Practice Act, and other state, and local statutes and/or regulations applicable to school nursing practice and adhere to KIPP School District policies and procedures.

Services Provided by KSL School Nurse

  • Promotes and protects the optimal health status of children.

  • Provides training to designated staff on recognition of signs and symptoms of illness and disease.

  • Performs health assessments and participates in 504 Plan and Individualized Education Plan (IEP) development.

  • Performs nursing procedures such as glucometer checks, medication nebulizer treatments, catheterization, etc. as directed by Medical Doctors' orders and the medical condition of the scholar.

  • Provides health assessments, which include screening for various health factors impacting student education.

  •  Provides health education and counseling to help prevent teen pregnancy, sexually transmitted diseases, tobacco use, alcohol, substance abuse, other health-related issues, and wellness programs.

  • Maintains, evaluates, and interprets cumulative health data to accommodate the individual needs of students.

  • Provides chronic disease management and education.

  • Plans and implements nursing care plans and services for children with disabilities and/or health conditions that interfere with learning, including medication administration and monitoring.

  • Provides assessments and interventions for students with mental health concerns.

  • Participates as the health consultant on school teams.

  • Promotes and assists in the control of communicable diseases through immunization programs, early intervention, surveillance, reporting, and follow-up of contagious diseases. Recommends provisions for a healthy school environment conducive to learning. 

  • Provides health education, health resources, wellness programs, and curriculum recommendations to the school staff.

  • Coordinates school/community health activities and serves as liaison between school, home, community, and health care providers.

Qualifications

What you should have...

  • Registered by the state of Missouri to practice Nursing (REQUIRED)

  • LPN or RN (REQUIRED)

  • Two years’ work experience as a Nurse; experience as a Pediatric or School Nurse preferred

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, familiar with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)

  •  Dedication to helping children grow and learn

  • Ability to lift 50 lbs

  • Ability to stand and walk for long periods of time
