We partner with families and communities to create joyful and rigorous schools in pursuit of a more just world. In 1995 we started our first middle school, KIPP Academy, in the Bronx, with a vision that every child grows up free to create the future they want for themselves and their communities. Today, our network consists of eight elementary schools, nine middle schools, one high school, and KIPP Forward, a comprehensive program to support our students and alumni in choosing and preparing for the educational and career paths that fit their goals and sense of purpose. KIPP NYC currently serves more than 11,000 students and alumni, has a staff of more than 1,000 (11% of whom are alumni), and continues to grow!

Job Description

Position Overview

The Managing Director of Talent will work closely with the Chief People Officer to lead talent strategy and operations for regional team and school based hiring. This includes management of our Recruitment team and Associate Teacher program. This role will play a critical role in helping us navigate the talent landscape and act as a thought partner regarding holistic talent acquisition strategy and retention efforts.  

The ideal candidate is a practical and visionary leader that will help lead KIPP NYC in developing best in class talent strategy. This person has strong experience building and maintaining relationships across teams as well as robust operational and systems leadership.  

This role is based in NYC and will require travel to our schools. If you relocate outside of a commutable distance or out of the state of NY, your employment will be subject to review, which may include separation from KIPP NYC. It is important that you notify HR if you move or have plans to relocate.

Key areas include: 

  • Recruitment: Enhance existing recruitment approach for regional and school based hiring with a focus on operational efficiency and sustainability. Lead Executive Searches for the organization.
  • Strategic planning:  Lead a comprehensive approach that connects recruitment and retention efforts
  • Data:  Use data to impact decision making, and the ability to drive reporting.  
  • Team management: Manage a team, including Director level employees responsible for regional team and school based hiring, including improving team performance and leading  team professional development efforts. 
  • Cross functional work: Partner with the Employee Experience team to lead talent reviews and organizational planning. 
  • Learning and Development: Ensure regular training on talent practices to ensure compliance and process buy-in.  Focus on DEI, ensure equitable processes that focus on the quality and diversity of candidate pools through as well as strategic outreach initiatives. 
  • Operations: Work with the regional Operations team regarding vendor management for substitute teaching staff.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree required; advanced degree (MBA, JD, or master’s degree) in a HR or Talent related field highly preferred
  • 15+ years of professional experience in building talent acquisition strategy, with 5+ years of successful team management, including motivating and developing high performing team members  to deliver results. 
  • Demonstrated execution of talent and recruitment strategy, particularly through the use of technology (ATS, HRIS, CRM).  
  • Ability to clearly define strategic issues and make decisions in a timely fashion, even in  the face of ambiguity. Able to navigate through organizational change 
  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills, including active listening, excellent writing and presentation skills.  
  • Strong interpersonal skills with a demonstrated ability to build consensus, facilitate  collaboration, problem-solving, and manage conflict among varied stakeholders in matrixed  environments.  
  • Demonstrated record of a commitment to equitable hiring practices and leveraging knowledge, skills, and mindsets of DEI to drive organizational results. 
  • Demonstrated passion for and a commitment to the KIPP NYC mission for high quality public education

Additional Information

Compensation and Benefits:

KIPP NYC offers a competitive salary ranging from $152,440 - $189,000. Salary ranges at KIPP NYC are standardized based on role level and role function. Individual salaries are determined through a lens of equity, accounting for years of experience relevant to the role and scope of responsibilities, and are benchmarked against others within the same salary band.
