KIPP — the largest nonprofit network of college-preparatory, public charter schools in the nation—has demonstrated, at scale, that all children have the potential to excel academically regardless of race or zip code. KIPP Indy Public Schools (KIPP Indy) was founded in 2004 with one class of fifth grade students and has grown to serve 1,300 students across three schools. KIPP Indy Public Schools is seeking an experienced Drumline Instructor to found KIPP Indy’s Pep Band by teaching students the fundamentals and advanced concepts of playing drums, cymbals, and other percussive musical instruments. Reporting to the Director of Student Life, the Drumline Instructor will coordinate the rehearsals and activities for the KIPP Indy Pep Band. The founding instructor will prepare and teach the ensemble for school and community-wide performances.

RESPONSIBILITIES

• Work closely with all staff members to develop a sound program, including musical arrangement and visual elements as needed.
• Design programs that effectively complement and enhance the performing arts program.
• Evaluate members' abilities and assign percussion ensemble equipment accordingly.
• Attend all rehearsals and performances, and teach cadences for marching/playing at athletic, school, and community events, performing regularly at home basketball games.
• Arrange and develop percussion warm-up and technique exercises.
• Coordinate the percussion rehearsal schedule with the Director of Student Life and Campus Director of Extracurricular Activities
• Ensure the highest possible level of performance from the percussion members through proper warm-up processes, effective preparation, and attention to individual members.
• Recruit potential percussion members while retaining current members.
• Ensure that the Pep Band is properly equipped for rehearsals and performances.
• Maintain a cooperative working relationship with the Athletic Director (Campus Director of Extracurricular Activities), Performing Arts Teacher, School Leaders, and school teams.
• Manage all equipment necessary for rehearsals and performances including maintenance, repair, and acquisition recommendations.
• Maintain and regularly inventory Pep Band uniforms.
• Recommend new property purchases within the budget allocations.
• Recommend Assistant Drumline Instructor as needed and if student interest deems necessary

• High School Diploma
• Background in marching band percussive performance
• Experience in composing, and choreographing routines for percussive units preferred, but not required
• Must pass network background check

COMPENSATION

This year-round part-time role is a quarterly stipend position based on successful execution of additional responsibilities outlined above. Returning instructors who meet program requirements are eligible for an annual bonus.
