Job Description

The School Nurse is a key member of KIPP Delta Public Schools. This position will report to the Child Nutrition and Wellness Director and is responsible for supporting KDPS's efforts in ensuring that every KIPPster has their health and wellness needs met.

The School Nurse will be expected to utilize the American Nurse's Association Nursing Process to promote and improve student health. Duties will include, but are not limited to:

  • Responsible for early detection of physical problems and health evaluations.
  • Responsible for disease prevention and mitigation efforts including contact tracing.
  • Assists in promoting programs on health-education and immunization.
  • Maintains clinical records 
  • Responsible for state and federal reporting for respective campus(es).
  • Coordinates vision, hearing, and orthopedic screening and health assessments.
  • Provides emergency aid to students and school staff.
  • Provide annual school-based trainings including but not limited to CPR, administering medicine, and other health-related protocols and procedures
  • Coordinate daily/weekly school-based schedules with Director of Operations and other school administrators so that services are provided to students in a timely and appropriate manner
  • Support with student recruitment and enrollment
  • Other duties as assigned 

Coordinated Care for Students with Special Health Needs

  • Development of and monitoring of individual health care plans (IHP’s) for students who need invasive procedures performed during the school day, as well as for students who may require adaptation to the health-related learning environment or classroom schedule. Applicable to RNs only. LPNs are only eligible to carry out actions related to the IHP.
    • Provision of case management and active collaboration with staff, students and families to promote self-management and optimal care during school hours.
    •  Provision of training for staff regarding chronic illnesses experienced by students at school.
    • Coordinates on-the-job training for staff providing services
    • Functioning as a health resource for chronically ill students and their families.
  • Provide consultation to members of the Individualized Education Program (IEP) team or other multidisciplinary teams on health-related concerns.
  • Provide consultation and recommendations in the planning and developing health accommodation plans for section 504 eligible students.

Wellness

  • Serve on the state-required Health and Wellness committee to provide insight and direction in strengthening the district’s wellness initiatives. 
  • Assists teachers in instructing students in health and nutrition education.
  • Ensure families have access to relevant health resources and materials 

Qualifications

  • Hours for school nurses are from 7:45 AM to 4:45 PM.
  • Possess a strong commitment to improving the health and wellness of all students. Be registered by the state of Arkansas to practice nursing.
  • Possess a valid, unencumbered Arkansas RN license preferred. LPN will be considered based on district needs.
  • Must be certified to perform CPR.
  • Work is self-directed and clinically autonomous.
  • Make independent and timely nursing decisions and triage.
  • Secure the cooperation and respect of students, faculty and staff.
  • Ability to accurately interpret and explain records, reports, activities, health care plans, accommodations and medical interventions.
  • Possess at least two years of nursing experience, ideally in a school setting. Experience working with children in a school, camp, or child-care setting.
