Job Description
The Opportunity
The Child Nutrition Sr. Facilities Technician is an essential part of the Child Nutrition Department. The Child Nutrition Sr. Facilities Technician is responsible for maintaining, repairing and installing Child Nutrition equipment. Duties include working on commercial cooking equipment, cleaning and maintaining refrigeration equipment throughout the region and responding to support tickets. He/she will perform handyman work, handle emergencies 24/7, and problem solve on a daily basis. The Child Nutrition Sr. Facilities Technician will build relationships with outside vendor companies such as commercial refrigeration repair services when needed. He/she will take pride and ownership of the region’s Child Nutrition equipment, facilities, and grounds. As a key member of the statewide Child Nutrition team, the Child Nutrition Sr. Facilities Technician will report to the Regional Child Nutrition Manager and work in conjunction with our facilities department. This position furthers the mission of KIPP by ensuring that our food service facilities are operational, clean and safe for students and faculty.
Key Responsibilities
- Diagnose, troubleshoot, and repair malfunctions in café equipment.
- Install new commercial kitchen equipment and components.
- Repair, replace, or calibrate controls, thermostats, switches, fuses, and electrical wiring. (Both electronic and pneumatic)
- Fabricate, assemble, and install gas, water and drain piping according to specifications and code.
- Diagnose, troubleshoot, and repair commercial refrigeration equipment (i.e., walk in and reach in refrigerators and freezers and ice machines and dispensers).
- Analyze and interpret blueprints, diagrams, schematics, and written reference material.
- Diagnose, troubleshoot, and repair gas and electric steamers, mixers, slicers, food processors, convection ovens, dishwashers, garbage disposals, steam line tables, vent hoods, booster water heaters, etc.
- Wire and connect motors, compressors, temperature controls, and humidity controls according to wiring schematics.
- Maintain refrigerant dispensing records to meet federal requirements.
- Maintain preventive maintenance schedules and procedures for all kitchen equipment, including changing of filters and cleaning condensers and coils.
- Receive and complete work orders. Order/secure parts to make repairs as needed.
- Select material and hardware and make time and materials estimates.
- Maintain accurate written records on material and labor used.
- Maintain inventory of district-owned tools, equipment, and materials.
- Inspect jobs upon completion and ensure areas are clean.
- Work with cafeteria managers and supervisors to complete projects.
- Detect needed repairs on equipment following established inspection procedures.
- Respond to emergency calls as needed.
Qualifications
- Minimum 5 years’ facilities maintenance related experience preferred.
- Expertise in, or technical knowledge of electrical and/or plumbing systems is required.
- EPA and/or HVAC Certification required
- Knowledge of commercial kitchen equipment repairs, maintenance, and installation techniques
- Knowledge of building systems and the maintenance and repair thereof.
- Licensure or certification in a trade is highly preferred.
- Skill in maintaining positive relations with others.
- Ability to manage complex projects or multiple small projects simultaneously.
- Meticulous attention to detail with an ability to produce high quality work in a dynamic environment.
- Verbal communication and interpersonal skills required to work with a broad group of stakeholders with different interests and needs.
- Basic computer skills required; Experience in Microsoft Outlook and/or facilities work order software management software preferred.
- English fluency is required; Spanish is a plus. Bilingual (English/Spanish) preferred.
- Reliable transportation required (may be required to drive to different facilities or to pick up supplies during the workday).
- Flexibility in work schedule.
