Job Description
The Bus Driver is responsible for the safe and efficient transportation of students to and from school, field trips, and other school-related activities. This role ensures the well-being of students during transit, maintains the cleanliness and operational readiness of the bus, and complies with all federal, state, and local transportation regulations.
Key Responsibilities
- Safely transport students to and from school and designated activities, adhering to assigned routes and schedules.
- Conduct daily pre-trip and post-trip bus inspections to meet safety and operational standards.
- Maintain the cleanliness and orderliness of the bus interior and exterior.
- Ensure all students have departed the bus at the end of each route, ensuring students are not left unattended.
- Report any incidents, accidents, or mechanical issues promptly to the Transportation Manager.
- Attend all required training sessions, safety meetings, and professional development courses as KIPP Delta and ADE.
- Maintain accurate records of mileage, fuel consumption, and student attendance as required.
- Enforce school bus safety rules and maintain discipline among students during transit.
- Communicate effectively with students, parents, and school staff regarding transportation matters.
This description outlines the primary duties of the position; however, CSSOs may be required to perform other job-related tasks as directed by a supervisor to ensure smooth school operations.
Work Environment
The role involves operating a school bus in various weather and traffic situations. The Bus Driver must remain alert and focused to ensure the safety of all passengers. Interaction with students, parents, and staff is a regular part of the job.
Qualifications
Education: High school diploma or equivalent required.
Licenses: Arkansas Commercial Driver's License (CDL) Class B with Passenger (P) and School Bus (S) endorsements.
Experience: Prior experience as a school bus driver is preferred.
- Must pass state and federal background checks, including fingerprinting and child maltreatment registry checks.
- Completion of at least twenty-four (24) hours of pre-service and annual in-service training.
- Pass a physical exam by a licensed physician or advanced practice nurse, including vision, hearing, and cardiovascular assessments, as mandated by ADE.
- Comply with pre-employment and random drug and alcohol testing requirements.
- Maintain a clean driving record and demonstrate the ability to manage student behavior effectively.
- Ability to sit for extended periods while operating a vehicle.
- Capable of performing pre-trip and post-trip inspections, including bending, walking, and climbing steps.
- Ability to assist students boarding and exiting the bus, including those with special needs.
- Ability to quickly respond to emergencies, including evacuating students from the bus.

Compensation
Bus Driver wages will be based on individual experience and within the SY 2025-26 Salary Schedule range.
