Job Description

The regional library media specialist is responsible for driving a culture of curious readers across KIPP Delta’s five schools. In this role, the regional library media specialist (RLMS) will cultivate and maintain a collection of texts and other media that bolster our curious readers' vision by allowing students to explore and learn about themselves and the world around them.   

The RLMS will report directly to the Director of Curriculum and Instruction  Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

Information Specialist (33% of time)

  • Collaborate with the School Leader, Director of Curriculum and Instruction, and faculty to implement the library media center vision
  • Systematically develop a collection of resources at each school site and access to resources outside the school
  • Cultivate a high-quality, divers, and engaging library collection
  • Organize, direct, and evaluate the library media program
  • Manage library clerks at each site to perform routine/daily library tasks
  • Ensure libraries are well-organized, clean, and useful to students and staff
  • Develop a curriculum inventory system to track and store all curricular resources for easy access for teachers
  • Seeks and utilizes current research and methods to enhance library operation, instruction, and technology. 

Professional Development and Community Relations (33% of time)

  • Lead annual class-based trainings on appropriate use of technology and copyright law
  • Provide quarterly PD sessions at each school to support teachers’ effectiveness in use of instructional technology
  • Offer guidance and support to teachers on innovative practices to accommodate the needs of all learners.
  • Lead curriculum development committees for the following units or classes:
    • K-3 week-long Arkansas History
    • Grade 4-5 month-long Arkansas History
    • Grade 7 or 8 semester-long Arkansas History
    • Grade K-8 two-week-long media literacy
    • Grade K-5 Read Across America Week
  • Promotes parent and community interest in the school and library
  • Follows state and school policies and procedures to ensure the goals and objectives are in accordance with district and state requirements. 
  • Prepares and submits accurate reports as required. 

Teacher of Information and Technology Skills (34% of time)

  • Monthly elementary sessions on use of the library media center (scheduled during social studies instructional block)
  • Aid students and staff in identifying, locating, and interpreting information housed in and outside the library center
  • Provide learning opportunities related to new technologies, use, and production of a variety of media formats
  • Teach students how to utilize electronic card catalogs, computer-generated bibliographies, online research databases, and other technology
  • Deliver monthly lessons to K-12 social studies classes on social justice topics such as bullying, heritage appreciate, neurodiversity awareness, conflict resolution, and climate consciousness
  • Expose students to new and emerging technologies through enrichment programming opportunities.

Other Responsibilities

  • Completes duties as assigned by the director of curriculum and instruction. 
  • Participates in regional and school-based professional development. 
  • Participates in student recruitment and retention activities. 

Qualifications

  • Current teaching certificate and Master’s Degree in Library and Media Science is required.
  • Minimum of three years of successful experience and demonstrated results in teaching, library media science, or a related field are preferred
  • Experience in a K – 12 public education preferred 
  • Exceptionally strong organizational skills are required.  
  • Familiarity with library circulation software and/or database software is preferred.  
  • Proficient in Microsoft Excel, PowerPoint, Word, and Outlook 
  • Strong knowledge of and passion for children’s literature is required. 
  • Highly collaborative.
  • Resourceful and flexible.
  • Ability to travel between schools and communities (Blytheville and Helena, AR).
