Job Description

The Opportunity 

The Regional Specialist, Multilingual Instruction role is an exciting opportunity for an individual who has extensive experience with second-language acquisition, deep content knowledge of effective sheltered instruction techniques and the English Language Proficiency Standards (ELPS); who is committed to advancing the academic achievement of emergent bilingual learners; and who is eager to influence multilingual education in their region.

The Regional Multilingual Instructional Specialist will have the opportunity to play a significant role in ensuring that our instructional vision is lived inside of our classrooms and schools by supporting school leadership teams with content-based ESL program implementation, instructional coaching, aligned data-analysis practices and aligned professional development opportunities in an effort to drive improved student results and closing the achievement gap in one of our regions: Houston, Austin, Dallas, or San Antonio. 

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist schools in curriculum implementation and alignment to TEKS/SEs and ELPS/PLDs to meet the linguistic and academic needs of multilingual students
  • Support teachers across multiple content areas to increase student language acquisition in all four domain areas: reading, writing, speaking, and listening.
  • Participate in campus instructional planning sessions to model and co-create instructional lessons that include linguistic accommodations.
  • Collaborate with ESL Program Managers in the development of regional and campus-based professional learning. 
  • Assist campuses with data analysis and the development of action plans in response to formative and summative data (ex. Benchmarks, Exit Tickets, TELPAS, MAP and STAAR) 
  • Model effective teaching within the classroom; provide support through co-planning and co-teaching
  • Participate in campus walks with campus leadership teams, district team members and ESL Program Managers
  • Demonstrate a collaborative approach to community and family partnerships
  • Assists in planning and implementation of summer language programs
  • Ensure compliance with federal, state, local, and district policies, rules and regulations for EL students

Qualifications

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Experience in coaching school leaders and teachers in effective instructional strategies for multilingual learners such as content and language supports, explicit academic vocabulary instruction, sheltered-instruction and cross-linguistic connections
  • Understanding of the TEKS and ELPS and have demonstrated ability to design effective lessons and assessments that directly align with the standards 
  • Deep knowledge of second language acquisition theory, pedagogy, and practice 
  • Experience in cross-curricular and integrated approaches in curriculum and instruction to promote all four language domains
  • Knowledge of evidence-based explicit and systematic literacy instruction
  • Knowledge of state and federal guidelines for Bilingual and ESL programs 
  • Experience designing and facilitating relevant Professional Development/Learning sessions to a variety of audiences, such as administrators, teachers, and community partners
  • Demonstrated success in multilingual student achievement as measured by analysis of assessment results
  • Detail oriented and able to manage multiple tasks and projects simultaneously
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills (bilingual in Spanish preferred)

Required Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree (required)
  • 5+ years of experience teaching in an ESL or Bilingual setting
  • an assistant principal or instructional coach with proven results advancing multilingual students’ content and language skills
  • experienced coaching teachers and/or leaders to improve instruction through observation & feedback; can identify targeted impact statements (action steps) based on observations to improve instruction efficiently and effectively

Required Licensure/Certification/Specialized Training

  • Primary - Texas teacher license with a Bilingual Education endorsement
  • Secondary - Texas teacher license with an English as a Second Language endorsement

Preferred Education and Experience

  • Master’s degree preferred
  • Previous experience leading/coaching Bilingual/ESL Department

Preferred Licensure/Certification/Specialized Training

  • Sheltered Instruction Practices
  • LPAC Language Proficiency Assessment Committee (LPAC)
