KIPP Metro Atlanta currently operates eleven KIPP schools including five primary schools, five middle schools, and one high school, as well as KIPP Forward which supports students on their journey “to and through” college. KIPP Metro Atlanta School's Support Team provides strategic, financial, and operational support and oversight to all KIPP Metro Atlanta schools and drives initiatives designed to strengthen schools’ academic programming and outcomes.

Job Description

KIPP Metro Atlanta Schools' Regional Support Team is seeking a Managing Director of Data and Analytics to lead the data governance, data-driven culture, and systems integration and management strategy for the region. The Managing Director will train and support school-based staff and other regional teams, ensuring that they have access to the data and information that they need to make data-driven decisions. The Managing Director of Data and Analytics will be responsible for managing the regional Data Team, including the data systems, student information, and data analytics functions.
 

As a Managing Director of Data and Analytics, your core responsibilities include:

 

Management/Leadership

  • Lead the KIPP Metro Atlanta Schools Data Team by setting team vision and budget, leading strategic planning and goal setting, gauging capacity, and progress monitoring for the work streams of data analytics, data engineering/architecture, student information, state accountability reporting, and data systems.
  • Lead cross-functional teams (e.g., data, operations, academics, technology, and compliance) that identifies and expedites overlapping functional work and creates opportunities for collaboration, efficiencies, and greater impact across teams.
  • Manage and coach the Data Team members to effectively execute the goals and vision of the department.
  • Develop, monitor, supervise, and manage aspects of the annual regional budget as it relates to the data and analytics functions.
  • Present at board meetings and interact with Board Members as needed.
  • Participate in the KIPP networks Data Community of Practice.
  • Help develop short and long-term strategies for the organization.

Data Strategy and Culture

  • Responsible for creating a vision and strategic plan for data, information, and analysis in partnership with the Chief of Staff and Regional Leadership Team.
  • Work with regional and school leaders to prioritize short- and long-term data needs, and ensure the collection, storage, and capacity for analysis and reporting on relevant data sources.
  • Partner with regional leadership to determine opportunities for standardization of systems and processes across the organization.
  • Support academic leaders in creating a comprehensive, balanced assessment system ensuring that all assessments create valuable data with a specific purpose and recommended use for driving student achievement. 
  • Foster a culture of data-driven decision-making across all functions of the organization and champion data as an engine for achieving the organization’s mission.
  • Collaborate closely with the Data Team and other stakeholders in analyzing database requirements, developing solutions to ongoing data and reporting needs, and building the tools and innovations that enable our schools to track, maintain, and/or analyze their student and instructional data.
  • Measure the impact of data strategy and leverage network and external research to surface promising practices in education data to support continuous improvement of data strategy.
  • Lead procurement and contract management process with data system vendors and recommend allocation of resources to achieve data strategy.

 

Data Governance and Infrastructure

  • Oversee the development of KIPP Metro Atlanta Schools’ regional data warehouse and infrastructure solution (data model development, ETL process, software tools, and documentation strategy). This includes planning, gathering requirements, and ultimately implementing new systems, technologies, and business practices related to data management.
  • Oversee the strategy and execution of the annual scheduling and rostering work for the entire KIPP Metro Atlanta Schools network to ensure master schedules, student rosters, and teacher assignments are available in the student information system by Day 1 of each school year.
  • Manage the environment and maintenance of KIPP Metro Atlanta Schools’ data systems including assessment, grade book, student information, and other organization platforms.
  • Partner with the Head of Academics to create a strategy for grading practices and grade reporting across multiple systems (e.g., Illuminate, Infinite Campus, etc.)
  • Oversee the identification, design, and implementation of internal process improvements: automating processes, optimizing data delivery, re-designing infrastructure for scalability, etc.
  • Streamline and improve data collection and management processes. This includes collaborating with regional and school-level operations staff and overseeing projects focused on improving data storage, security, and quality.
  • Create a data security plan that includes internal security and external sharing norms.
  • Manage the relationship with the data warehouse and infrastructure vendor(s).
  • Direct the documentation of best practices for data management and reporting through the data warehouse; track all customizations


Data Analysis, Application, and Action

  • Oversee the creation of high-quality analyses to draw implications from the student, teacher, and organizational data to answer questions for key stakeholders and inform strategic decisions for the school and regional leadership teams.
  • Determine and oversee the creation of predictive analytics and statistical models to support the academics, operations, and student support teams in allocating resources efficiently and making informed programmatic decisions. 
  • Lead alignment of reports and dashboards with preexisting structures and routines; develop training and support for school and regional leaders to effectively use reports and dashboards.
  • Oversee design and maintenance of regional central access platform (WordPress site) and ensure accessibility of visualizations and dashboards for end users.
  • Collaborate with staff to determine key metrics for data analysis and support the annual target-setting process.
  • Create and implement student-level target creation and monitoring system and coach regional and school academic leaders on using student targets to drive instructional planning.
  • Support teams with using program evaluation methods to proactively measure the impact of initiative pilots and use this data to determine the scalability of initiatives.
  • Mentor school and organizational leaders on using data insights and trends and strengthening a data-driven culture through data literacy skills.
  • Serve as primary contact for all external and internal data requests.
  • Coordinate the documentation of all data analysis and synthesis methods and processes.

 

Accountability, Compliance, and State Reporting

  • Facilitate accountability by ensuring KIPP Metro Atlanta has a good understanding of state and district policies and comparing student data against those policies (e.g., requirements for state accountability measures such as CCRPI, School Climate Star Ratings, etc.)
  • Coordinate all logistical aspects of data reporting needs for regulatory agencies (e.g., charter renewals and annual reporting), the KIPP Foundation (annual data collection), and KIPP Metro Atlanta’s external stakeholders (e.g., Charter School Growth Fund, grant managers, etc.)
  • Lead the regional survey strategy, including creating and executing of internal surveys and ensuring completion of required, external surveys (e.g., state, Foundation, etc.)

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree required;
    • Advanced degree in business, education, public administration/policy, or related field preferred.
  • Prior direct K-12 teaching or education experience preferred.
  • Minimum 8+ years professional work experience in field/function, ideally in a charter school or other K-12 education organization, or transferable experience from another private or public sector organization. Minimum 4+ years of managerial experience leading high-performing teams.
  • Significant experience in database management and reporting; knowledge of data reporting and dashboard tools.
  • Advanced Excel expertise and skills; ability to develop reports and utilize Excel tools to achieve database reporting needs as a temporary bridge to a long-term comprehensive technology solution.
  • Knowledge of database software and statistical analysis.
  • Knowledge of educational data and familiarity with student information systems (e.g. PowerSchool, Illuminate, Salesforce, and/or other student information systems) preferred.
  • Strong communication, writing, and presentation skills; ability to translate technical information understandably and concisely for teachers and leadership.
  • Familiarity with relational databases; the ability to write, revise, and use SQL to query databases.
  • Proven analytic, strategic, problem-solving and organizational skills, and extraordinary attention to detail.
  • Organized planner and project manager with proven ability to multi-task, take initiative, prioritize effectively, and deliver for multiple stakeholders on deliverables and deadlines.
  • Articulate, professional demeanor with strong self-confidence, initiative, and leadership skills.
  • Demonstrated success providing superior customer service.
  • Ability to build and manage relationships with external vendors.
