Responsibilities 

The KIPP DC CTO leads KIPP DC’s talent acquisition, human resources, and talent development. One of the CTO’s elevated priorities is to update and execute on the innovative and effective strategy that enables KIPP DC to recruit exceptional instructional and regional staff in the context of a changing educational landscape. Relatedly, the CTO will develop a multipronged retention strategy that promotes long-term stability and enhanced student and system performance. The CTO will also manage and lead the multilayered talent team, which include employees with a variety of tenure and experience.

The CTO’s responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:

Lead the talent team

  • Manage a multilayered team of approximately 30 people
  • Set annual vision and associated goals
  • Manage the talent team’s annual budget of $20 million
  • Develop systems to invest the team and hold the team accountable
  • Grow future leaders by mentoring direct reports and providing meaningful feedback on a regular basis
  • Prioritize equity and inclusion in all areas of work

Design and execute on strategy to recruit exceptional instructional and regional staff

  • Oversee the recruitment of approximately 200 employees annually
  • Develop a talent strategy that targets experienced educators, educators from the District of Columbia, and educators of color
  • Continuously improve on existing selection processes, with a focus on equitable hiring practices
  • Innovate and create new systems to collect and analyze data from recruitment pipelines and selection processes

Ensure KIPP DC’s HR operations are efficient and scalable

  • Oversee human resources administration functions including benefits, compensation, employee relations, customer service, compliance, staff policies, and staff information systems
  • Continuously improve on the effectiveness and efficiency of KIPP DC’s core HR operations
  • Gather and analyze data necessary for compliance reporting and internal benchmarking

Support regional staff

  • Support hiring managers with onboarding, which includes the planning and facilitation of centralized training and onboarding activities for new hires
  • Support team member development, including individual contributors to senior leaders, by sourcing and facilitating learning opportunities

Build and implement strategies to support a high-performing and diverse workforce

  • Build data driven systems that allow us to learn from our current recruitment, development, and retention efforts
  • Strengthen the regional evaluation system to provide regular and meaningful improvement, growth, and accountability for staff
  • Lead network initiatives to build a more diverse, equitable, and inclusive workforce
  • Develop initiatives to support the professional development of staff in alignment with KIPP DC’s organizational goals

Serve as a member of KIPP DC’s executive team

  • Set and drive toward organizational priorities and lead change
  • Serve as a culture carrier and thought leader for the organization
  • Collaborate within and across functional areas
  • Serve as a key external representative of KIPP DC
  • Share talent best practices and collaborate across a network of 20+ KIPP regions nation-wide

Qualifications

Requirements

  • A bachelor's degree is required. At least 15 years of relevant work experience, with 8-10 years of management experience.
  • Prior management experience working across lines of difference, leading large, multilayered teams, and navigating stakeholders through change management.
  • Demonstrated experience and a track record of results in teacher recruitment.
  • Demonstrated experience in the areas of either human resources or talent development.
  • Exceptional relationship building skills, with the ability to cultivate and create buy-in across key stakeholders including school-based staff, school leadership, and external partners. Prior change management experience is required. 
  • Deep commitment to racial and educational equity; ability to hold self and others accountable for centering equity in talent practices.

Benefits and Compensation

KIPP DC offers an extremely competitive compensation and benefits package:

  • The anticipated starting salary for this position is $180,445-$222,902. At KIPP DC we strive for clarity, equity, and to be highly competitive. When determining salaries we look at benchmarks in the education and non-profit sector.  
  • KIPP DC offers a robust benefits package including medical, dental, and vision insurances; various voluntary benefits; and employer paid benefits such as short term disability, long term disability, life insurance, and a membership to One Medical.
  • KIPP DC also offers a 403(b) retirement account with a 3% employer contribution and a 3% match with vesting after three years.
  • Currently, individuals in this role have up to 15 paid time off days, up to 10 paid sick days, and 12 paid holidays. This is subject to change and your exact schedule will be shared in your offer letter.
  • As a headquarters team that is focused on being responsive to our schools and meeting the needs of our students and families, we approach our work in a way that reflects these priorities. Schools operate in person and our students and families rely on us for in-person support which requires this position to be fully on-site. This role is currently required to be on-site or in schools during regular work hours.

COVID-19 Vaccination

KIPP DC requires all staff to provide proof that they are up to date on their COVID-19 vaccine (meaning they have received a full course of a COVID vaccine and received a booster when they are eligible) or obtain approval for exemption due to medical or religious reasons before beginning employment. New hires who have not received all doses of a COVID vaccine, who are eligible for a booster but have not received it, or who are awaiting approval for exemption will not be able to begin employment.
