Job Description

Position Overview

KIPP Nashville seeks an experienced and knowledgeable, hands-on Controller who will design, lead, and manage all daily accounting operations, audit, compliance, internal control, and monthly/annual financial reporting for a $50M+ annual budget.  The Controller will manage the execution of accounts payable and receivable, oversight of financial systems (including the general ledger), the annual audit and 990 processes. The Controller will manage the regional Accounting team of two accountants.

 

Key Responsibilities:
Responsibilities of the Controller include, but are not limited to:

 

Accounting Management

  • Set the vision for and lead the accounting department
  • Oversee the daily operations of the accounting department including: control systems, general ledger, cash flow, payables, receivables, credit card accounts and accounting operations, and policies and procedures
  • Lead the end-to-end accounting process, including month end close project management.  Train and support applicable staff in carrying out their duties in the process resulting in a clean annual audit
  • Manage the accounting system (Sage Intacct) and ensure it is meeting the needs of the organization.
  • Maintain a well-documented system of accounting policies and procedures 
  • Manage cash collection procedures and ensure policy adherence
  • Manage the accounting system and ensure it is meeting the needs of the organization
  • Ensure acceptable cash balances in each bank account and make transfers as needed
  • Provide training to end users on accounting policies and procedures, chart of accounts, etc.
  • Manage the annual financial audit and 990 tax process
  • Provide support to the CFO as needed
  • Ensure required debt payments are made on a timely basis
  • Process adjustments and other journal entries as needed
  • Maintain the chart of accounts
  • Maintain an orderly accounting filing system
  • Maintain a system of controls over accounting transactions
  • Research and resolve transaction errors and re-class as needed
  • Manage inter-organizational transfers and reporting

 

Accounts Payable

  • Ensure accounts payable are paid in a timely manner
  • Oversee maintenance of vendor files, including W9 forms, certificates of insurance and 1099 process

 

Accounts Receivable

  • Ensure grants and accounts receivable are collected promptly
  • Ensure that revenue is recognized accurately in the correct accounting period
  • Verify timely deposit uploads and deposit adjustments into the bank register
  • Review, verify, and adjust accounting entries from the Development Team

 

Reconciliations

  • Ensure regular bank reconciliations are timely and accurate
  • Verify timely entries of bank adjustments and check clearing
  • Confirm completeness and accuracy of balance sheet reconciliations
  • Complete inter-organizational reconciliations on a monthly basis

 

Asset Management

  • Maintain and manage the fixed asset/inventory list, including provide user training
  • Ensure fixed asset/inventory policy and procedures are followed

 

Reporting

  • Develop, improve, and issue timely and complete financial statements, including financial and operating metrics, for both internal and external stakeholders
  • Create and manage various general ledger reports to assist with budget and grant analyses
  • Provide financial analyses as needed to regional functional teams and other stakeholders

 

Fiscal Policy

  • Work with CFO to maintain a comprehensive, accurate, and well-documented system of accounting policies and procedures
  • Develop and update policies as needed

 

Audit and Compliance

  • Manage the annual financial audit and 990 tax process
  • Coordinate the provision of information to external auditors and ensure accuracy of data and information for the annual audit
  • Conduct periodic internal audits to ensure compliance with cash, grant accounting, and accounts payable/receivable policies and procedures
  • Manage commercial banking relationships 
  • Comply with local, state, and federal government reporting requirements and tax filings
  • Safeguard assets and ensure accurate and timely recording of all transactions by implementing disciplines of internal audits, controls and checks across all departments

 

Management & Leadership

  • Lead, coach, develop, and provide feedback to accounting teammates, whose primary duties are accounts payable, accounts receivable, and reconciliations
  • Manage the accuracy and productivity of day-to-day and monthly activities
  • Ensure that the Accounting team is providing high levels of customer service to internal and external stakeholders
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with teams across the organization, partnering closely with the finance team and school directors of operations, including training on fiscal policies

Qualifications

Desired Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance required
  • Strong accounting skills required
  • CPA strongly preferred
  • Five years of experience in a accounting role with a successful track record; prior non-profit experience is preferred
  • Technology savvy to efficiently and effectively manage data for financial reporting; knowledge of Sage Intacct desired 
  • Demonstrated success in developing and monitoring systems to manage internal operations and processes to meet monthly, quarterly and annual deadlines

Additional Information

Our comprehensive compensation package includes life insurance and long-term disability coverage provided by KIPP Nashville, voluntary medical and dental plans, in addition to retirement benefits and an annual salary increase. To establish equitable salary practices, the compensation package is derived from the regional KIPP Nashville Public Schools pay scale. This position is exempt and will follow a 12-month schedule.
