Job Description

Director of Gifted and Talented

KIPP New Jersey is looking for a Director of Gifted and Talented to create and execute the development of a Gifted and Talented vision that supports our students and staff through comprehensive programming in our schools in both Camden and Newark. This role can be based in either Camden or Newark. 

Here’s what you need to know:

The Director of Gifted and Talented will work in collaboration with the Managing Director of Special Education, the Executive Director of KIPP NJ, regional directors of Special Education to co-create the vision for Gifted and Talented programming. Over the course of the year this person will learn from other G&T programs across the state, determine eligibility for programming, begin screening students for programming to start in SY22, and hire a team of Gifted and Talented teachers to begin teaching in the Fall of 2024.

Here’s what you’ll be doing:

  • Research high performing G&T programs in the State of NJ.
  • Determine which screening exams will be used to select students for programming.
  • Determine the model for providing G&T services across our schools in Camden and Newark.
  • Create an annual budget for G&T services beginning in FY25.
  • Work with school leaders and directors of school operations to understand how scheduling can work best for students receiving G&T services.
  • Hire a team of G&T teachers to begin.
  • Design training and onboarding for G&T teachers beginning in July 2024.
  • Create program goals and ensure key stakeholders understand and are bought into those goals.
  • Ensure the program is designed to be in compliance with NJ special education regulations.
  • Collaborate with Human Resources to ensure all gifted and talented teachers and providers are properly certified and licensed.

Qualifications

Must Haves:

  • At least 4 years of experience as a teacher
  • At least 2 years of experience in a leadership role (department chair, grade level team person, dean, or assistant principal)
  • At least 2 years of experience coaching teachers
  • Has received satisfactory ratings on all teacher/administrator evaluations the last 4 years

Nice to Haves

  • A master’s degree in education (preference is given to applicants with a special education concentration)
  • Experience in a high-performing district or charter environment
