Job Description

Position Overview:

The Director of School Operations reports to the Chief Operating Officer, and drives the operational excellence of KIPP Nashville schools through the coaching of school-based Directors of Operations (DOOs) and the development of DOOs in Residence. The Director of School Operations will ensure KIPP Nashville employs efficient, student-centered systems at all schools with a focus on replicability and scalability, as well as developing regional operations talent through the development of DOOs in Residence.


Responsibilities of the Director of School Operations include, but are not limited to:

Sets and drives a vision of operational excellence across schools

  • Establish a compelling, shared vision for the look and feel of our schools

  • Drive that vision through school-based operations leaders (DOOs), through campus walk-throughs, and other feedback channels

  • Manage annual, monthly, and weekly priorities for school operations roles

  • Routinely assess DOOs based on progress toward goals and principal feedback

  • Support DOOs who need additional on-the-job training

  • Build tools and systems to support school operations success

  • Establish a shared vision for customer service

  • Ensure daily operations run smoothly at each school which can include crisis management

  • Performs in-the-field observations (weekly meetings, walk-throughs, etc.) and participates in the DOO performance cycle

  • Regularly meets and collaborates with the Regional Support Team department leaders (Finance, Technology, Facilities, Nutrition, Health Academic, Talent, Data) to identify and work on operational efficiencies

  • Ensures that schools collaborate on budgeting processes and adhere to all fiscal policies and procedures

Develops future school-based operations leaders

  • Recruit, select, hire and train DOOs in Residence, to prepare them to become future school-based operations leaders 

  • Provide coaching, on-the-job training, and quarterly performance reviews utilizing data, skip level feedback, and leadership competencies

  • Equip and guide mentor DOOs to provide DOOs in Residence with additional coaching & support

  • Prepare DOOs in Residence to compete for open DOO opportunities

Inspire and develop school-based operations leaders (Directors of Operations)

  • Build an arc of the year development series for Director of Operations (DOOs), DOO in Residence (DOOIRs), Ops Coordinators, and Office Managers aligned to the leadership competencies and lead core talent trainings

  • Use data to provide coaching and supports to principals and DOOs around school operations talent development and retention

  • Train principals to manage DOOs through performance management, observation and feedback cycles.

  • Work closely with regional and school leadership to recruit, hire, and train high-quality DOOs and other key operational staff

Qualifications

  • Five years relevant work experience in people and/or project management

  • Demonstrated record of success in managing individuals and teams to outcomes

  • At least 2 years of school operations experience is required 

  • Strong project management experience; strong organizational skills and attention to detail

  • Strong communication and relationship-building skills

  • Demonstrated passion for the mission, vision and values of KIPP Nashville; comfort and willingness to actively participate in the KIPP Nashville community

  • Bachelor’s degree required; Graduate degree in business, education, HR, or related field preferred.

Additional Information

Our comprehensive compensation package includes life insurance and long-term disability coverage provided by KIPP Nashville, voluntary medical and dental plans, in addition to retirement benefits and an annual salary increase. To establish equitable salary practices, the compensation package is derived from the regional KIPP Nashville Public Schools pay scale. This position is exempt and will follow a 12-month schedule.
