KIPP – the largest nonprofit network of college-preparatory, public charter schools in the nation – has demonstrated, at scale, that all children have the potential to excel academically regardless of race or zip code. KIPP currently serves over 100,000 students in 242 schools across the country, including Indianapolis. KIPP Indy Public Schools (KIPP Indy) was founded in 2004 with one class of fifth grade students and has grown to educate more than 1,000 students across three schools. By the 2022-2023 school year, KIPP Indy will educate nearly 1,500 students in the Martindale-Brightwood community on the Northeast side of Indianapolis. Job Description

Reporting to the Executive Director, the Chief Administration Officer (CAO) will be an integral member of KIPP Indy’s senior leadership team. The CAO will oversee and lead key functional areas for KIPP Indy’s network of schools, including finance, accounting, compliance, technology, human resources, and risk management. The CAO will play an essential role in ensuring KIPP Indy Public Schools are equipped to prepare students with the skills and confidence to pursue the paths they choose – college, career, and beyond – so they can lead fulfilling lives and create a more just world.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Team and Organizational Leadership

  • Serve as member of KIPP Indy’s Region Wide Leadership Team (RWLT) to set vision and direction, establish and refine strategic priorities, and lead organizational culture
  • Collaborate with RWLT to support organizational health, mitigate and address risks, and model core values 
  • Build deep relationships with school and regional leaders, acting as a strategic advisor to them and problem-solving as issues arise
  • Cultivate relationships with critical KIPP Indy stakeholders, including families, board members, community partners, and partners
  • Lead KIPP Indy’s Board Finance Committee
  • Participate in and staff all KIPP Indy Board of Directors meetings and functions
  • Manage Director of Business Operations (DBO), Director of Human Resources (DHR), Director of Student Information and Technology (DSIT), and oversee relationship and performance of external controller
  • Support the organization’s growth strategy, collaborating with the RWLT to evaluate financial implications of different growth scenarios

Finance

  • Set vision and direction for all business operations functions, including leading annual planning and goal setting, and overseeing all team functions
  • Collaborate with Executive Director (ED) to spearhead, refine, and maintain financial models that will inform both near term and long-term decision making by school and regional leaders 
  • Lead annual budget planning process for organization’s $26 million operating budget
  • Develop, refine, document, and implement organization-wide processes, reports and dashboards to support effective communication on all finance matters across the organization 
  • Contribute to increasing financial literacy and business acumen across the organization, making recommendations to policies, systems, and collaboration structures to drive efficiencies
  • Analyze monthly organizational financials to assess financial health and adherence to annual budgets
  • Maintain a nuanced understanding of laws and regulations pertaining to school finance
  • Serve as a critical thought-partner and support for department leaders and on budgetary matters and build their capacity as fiscal stewards of the organization’s resources.  
  • Assess the distribution of resources with a clear equity lens, ensuring allocations provide the best resources to equitably and effectively meet the needs of all KIPP students, families, and schools.   
  • Collaborate with Chief Operating Officer (COO) to set vision and direction and lead planning for capital purchase strategy across the network
  • Oversee vision and support implementation of grants management for all public revenue
  • Review and approve all contracts
  • Oversee all organizational loans and financing, ensuring the organization is poised to meet all covenants in both the short and long-term
  • Lead organization’s annual audit, serving as lead point of contact for third-party audit firm and overseeing team roles and responsibilities
  • Serve as organization’s expert on internal controls, leading annual review and refinement process

Human Resources

  • Set vision and direction for human resources at KIPP Indy, collaborating with the DHR to ensure consistent, equitable policies and practices are in place that foster long-term success for all employees
  • Serve as organization’s lead expert on employee policies and spearhead annual process for staff handbook revisions
  • Oversee human resource information system (HRIS) and the system for all employee filed
  • Collaborate with Chief of Talent and Equity (CTE) and DHR on systems for new and exiting employees
  • Collaborate with RWLT to develop and implement compensation strategy
  • Lead all human resource investigations and advise and coach School and Regional Leaders around hiring and performance management best practices
  • Maintain a nuanced understanding of laws and regulations pertaining to human resources
  • Oversee and approve payroll
  • Lead evaluation and selection of insurance carriers and oversee implementation of all insurance policies
  • Serve as organization’s expert and lead point of contact around Title IX and staff boundary policies

Risk Management, Compliance, Legal, Technology

  • Collaborate with RWLT around incident command structures in place to support responses to emergent risks
  • Collaborate with COO to plan and execute quarterly risk management step backs  
  • Serve as lead point of contact for outside counsel, collaborating as needed around legal issues that arise
  • Oversee all organizational compliance, supporting the DSIT to effectively plan and execute all compliance and reporting obligations
  • Collaborate with DSIT to set vision and direction for technology strategy, acquisition, and management

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • At least ten (10) years of progressive, full-time, professional experience in finance, budget leadership, public policy, non-profit leadership, public administration, or business management.  
  • Five (5) years of senior level supervisory/administrative/management experience, preferably in a dynamic, growing organization. 
  • Unquestioned integrity and commitment to the KIPP Indy mission and community
  • Track record of achieving exceptional results in prior role(s)
  • Pass a criminal background check, as required by law

COMPENSATION
Salary is competitive, commensurate with experience, and includes benefits. Teachers are also eligible for performance-based bonuses.
