Position Overview

Substitute teachers help students to learn subject matter and/or skills that are required for scheduled lessons and provide meaningful instruction for assigned classrooms in the absence of the regular classroom teacher.

Duties/Responsibilities

Curriculum and Instruction

  • Teaches the lessons prepared by the absent teacher
  • Reports in writing, on the form provided, the day’s activities at the conclusion of each day and provides other feedback as requested by the school leader
  • Follows all district policies, rules, and procedures to which regular teachers are subject and which good teaching practice dictates
  • Consults, as appropriate, with the school leader before initiating any lesson or other procedure not specified in the teacher’s plans
  • In collaboration with the grade level team, plan and execute a rigorous, standards-aligned curriculum that assesses students’ progress.
  • Demonstrate strong pedagogy

Commitment to School and Classroom Culture

  • Maintains appropriate student behavior at all times throughout the school day for assigned students
  • Provides appropriate supervision of students during class, breaks, meals, and transitions to maintain an optimal work environment and ensure students’ safety and well-being in partnership with School Leadership
  • Develop positive rapport with students
  • Create and foster a positive and calm learning environment
  • Enforce, uphold, and exhibit school’s values, student management policies and culture
  • Provide administrative and other support to home school (or where needed) when not given a temporary teaching assignment

School/Community Relations

  • Maintains good relations with the faculty and staff of the district
  • Treats information about students and staff with the utmost confidence
  • Assist with various work inside and outside the classroom, including supporting the main office team, teaching and helping coordinate enrichment classes, organizing student events, and developing mentoring learning partnerships with students
  • Perform clerical duties, as needed, that serve to advance student learning
  • Communicate effectively with students, families, and colleagues
  • Performs other duties as assigned

Growth Mindset

  • Keeps informed about current educational trends and new methods in education
  • Meets with a coach to implement feedback on lessons and instruction
  • Problem solves and makes timely determinations with classroom issues in a solution-focused manner
  • Accountable for students’ mastery of academic standards, alongside other teachers and school leaders

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited College or University, required
  • Valid NYS Teaching Licensure or willingness to pursue state certification, required
  • Experience as a school educator, preferably in a charter or public school environment, preferred
  • Prior experience working in schools and urban communities is preferred but not required
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule outside of regular business hours
  • Aptitude to create and work within an inclusive environment that honors and supports a diversity of backgrounds and perspectives
