Job Description

KIPP Foundation is currently seeking Early Literacy Video Managers who will be responsible for visiting classrooms in person to complete video recordings of classroom lessons in Kindergarten, First and Second grade. Video managers are also responsible for scheduling recording times with teachers, as well as submitting this footage to an online platform. The purpose of these video classroom observations is to: a) gather evidence on the ways in which principles of structured language and literacy are evident in early literacy classroom instruction; b) provide feedback to educators; and c) build a virtual library of early literacy instruction. Video lessons from participating teachers will be collected three times per year. This position is available starting September 2022 and will conclude by May 31, 2023.

Responsibilities

Early Literacy Video Managers will be responsible for scheduling appropriate times to visit early literacy classrooms; capture high-quality video footage of foundational skills instruction; and submit videos via an online platform. Specific responsibilities include:

  • Completing 1-2 hours of training on conducting classroom observations and using technology systems required in this project, beginning in September 2022. All training will be conducted virtually.
  • Scheduling classroom visits with a caseload of approximately 12 teachers across three observation rounds, beginning in September 2022 and continuing through early May 2023 (dates for specific observation rounds will vary across seven KIPP regions, and each round is separated by several weeks without any observations). This includes timely, professional communication directly with teachers to determine the date and time of all classroom visits.
  • We anticipate that the Early Literacy Video Manager time commitment will be approximately 30 hours, total, as these three cycles take place between November and May.
  • Traveling to local schools, using personal transportation. Transportation expenses are not reimbursed.
  • Utilizing personal video recording equipment, ideally including microphones to adequately document classroom discussion, capturing high-quality classroom video recordings on the date and time agreed upon when scheduling with each teacher. Each classroom visit is anticipated to take approximately 1 hour. 
  • Following all school policies and procedures for the duration of the school visit to conduct each classroom video recording.
  • Demonstrating professionalism in all interactions with school staff and students.
  • Submitting classroom video recordings to KIPP’s secure file sharing site following standard protocol within 48 hours of filming.
  • Participating in all required introductory and ongoing training and one-on-one checkins as needed.

Skills, Experience, and Qualifications

Early Literacy Video Managers are professional when communicating with school staff and when visiting schools; self-motivated with strong organizational skills; and demonstrate a track record of producing high-quality video recordings of dynamic environments. Ideal candidates will:

  • Have a basic understanding of lesson structure and classroom settings - education background preferred but not required
  • Pass a background check
  • Have reliable transportation
  • Possess excellent organizational and time management skills
  • Work well independently
  • Display strong writing and oral communication skills
  • Be able to skillfully operate video equipment
  • Be familiar with uploading to online video platforms
  • Demonstrate ability to capture high-quality video of dynamic environments
  • Possess a reliable high-speed internet connection and computer needed to upload video files
  • Demonstrate proficiency with basic software tools (email, word processing, spreadsheets such as Google sheets, Zoom, Google Meet, etc.).
  • Act with discretion and maintain confidentiality of sensitive information
  • Be able to work effectively with others at all levels of an organization and to consistently display a high level of professionalism in all interactions

Additional Information

This is a part-time,  non-exempt role that requires traveling in-person to elementary schools during regular school hours to video record a 1-hour classroom lesson in an early elementary classroom. It requires ability to utilize standard technology, including access to video recording equipment, a personal computer and reliable internet service,

COVID-19 considerations: Early Literacy Video Managers are expected to adhere to vaccination and masking policy set by schools visited.

Travel requirements: Early Literacy Video Managers are expected to travel to and from schools within their district/region.

Location

Early Literacy Video Managers must be located within driving distance of KIPP Elementary Schools in Baltimore, Denver, Metro Atlanta, Nashville, New Orleans, Northern California (East Palo Alto, Oakland, Redwood City, San Francisco), and Philadelphia. We anticipate hiring 1-2 Early Literacy Video Managers for each location.

Compensation and Benefits
Early Literacy Virtual Observers will be paid at an hourly rate of $35 per hour for all training and completing video recordings (school visit, video upload, etc.).
