Job Description

KIPP Metro Atlanta Schools' Support Team (ST) seeks an Achievement Director of Secondary Literacy responsible for designing, refining, and supporting our schools’ instructional blueprint.  Reporting directly to the Head of Academics, the Achievement Director of Secondary Literacy will be responsible for ensuring literacy outcomes for all of our 5-12 students.  This individual will drive the collection, analysis, and creation of a plan to respond to regional literacy data.  They will serve as the lead learner, staying on top of best practices and continuing to build their content expertise. Additionally, the Achievement Director of Secondary Literacy will provide direct coaching support and development to Principals, Assistant Principals, and Teachers on literacy programming throughout KIPP Metro Atlanta’s secondary schools.      

 

As an Achievement Director of Secondary Literacy, your core responsibilities include:

 

Literacy and Humanities Programming 5-12

  • Provide on the ground literacy content coaching to teachers and school leaders 5-12
  • Design, implement, and manage all regional literacy programming and assessments 5-12   
  • Support schools in designing school level literacy programming for 5-12 leaders and teachers in alignment with regional vision for literacy 
  • Create and monitor the implementation of scopes and sequences and lesson plans for 5-12 instruction
  • Create and refine systems to support literacy academic programming, including assessment strategy and resources, as well as grading policies and resources  
  • Plan and facilitate 5 -12 professional development for teachers, instructional leaders, and school leaders in order to build our teachers’ and leaders’ capacity with literacy content and instructional execution 
  • Conduct classroom observations with school leadership teams to ensure effective literacy instruction
  • Provide coaching support to Principals, Assistant Principals, and Teachers, targeting high leverage action steps to improve literacy instruction and academic outcomes
  • Provide coaching and support to a regional, school-based Social Studies lead to design and implement regional 5-8 Social Studies scopes, assessment strategy, and professional development in support of regional literacy outcomes
  • Analyze scholar achievement and growth data—in collaboration with the Regional Academic Support Team, Heads of Schools, and Secondary School Leaders—to identify high-level trends across the region, inform our regional instructional strategy, and provide individualized support to schools 
  • Collaborate with Academic Support Team and Heads of Schools in the planning and facilitation of Assistant Principal Cohort professional development
  • Collaborate with the Scholar Support Team to ensure that scholars with diverse learning needs receive high-quality, grade-level instruction and personalized intervention that meets their needs
  • Assess and evaluate the effectiveness of curricula materials and resources
  • Research the current best practices in literacy to identify areas for programmatic improvement
  • Collaborate with the Achievement Director for Primary Literacy to ensure K-12 alignment
  • Manage monthly and yearly budget and purchasing for 5-12 literacy –including but not limited to curricula, materials, blended learning platforms, texts, and professional development
  • Maintain contact with and develop relationships with other like-minded organizations and individuals in the Atlanta area and across the nation 
  • Collaborate with the KIPP Foundation and other KIPP regions to implement best practices and share resources

Support Team and Academic Support Team Infrastructure

  • Participate as an active member of the Secondary Leadership Team and Regional Academic Support Team
  • Work with the Heads of Academics to develop, implement, and align literacy programming and outcomes for K-12 students
  • Collaborate with other Academic Support Team members to ensure comprehensive and cohesive academic programming for K-12 students
  • Work with the Academic Support Team to align grading policies and resources for schools
  • In collaboration with Data Team and school-based staff, ensure school-level data is timely and accurately entered and all systems are properly functioning
  • Collaborate with the Data Team on the assessment calendar and Data Driven Instructional practices
  • All other duties as assigned

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree required 
    • Master’s degree preferred
  • Minimum 7 years of experience with at least 4 years of teaching experience and 3 years of management experience with a preference for experience in grades 5-12
  • Immediate understanding of rigorous and effective literacy instruction and deep understanding of literacy standards and instructional practices 
  • Experience implementing and/or coaching teachers to implement a knowledge-building literacy curriculum
  • Familiarity with literacy interventions and MTSS practices for middle and high school preferred
  • Track record of success influencing and motivating partners to action
  • Demonstrated ability to lead multiple high-profile and complex projects simultaneously
  • Collaborative team player, comfortable leading as well as executing projects as required
  • Excellent leadership, self-management, and organizational skills required
  • Articulate, professional demeanor with strong self-confidence and initiative
  • Ability to exercise excellent judgment in decision-making, think strategically, work collaboratively, and gather and analyze data, compile information, and prepare reports
  • Flexible and able to multi-task within an ambiguous, fast-moving, entrepreneurial environment, while also driving toward clarity and solutions
  • Proficient in MS Office and/or Google Suite, particularly Word/Docs, Excel/Sheets and PowerPoint/Slides
