Job Description

The Opportunity
Every member of the Team & Family at KIPP Texas plays a critical role in ensuring our students are on the path to get to and through college. Our educators are passionate advocates for their students and their families, working relentlessly to ensure that our students have access to doors to opportunity. As a lead teacher, our educators deliver exceptional instruction and assess student growth, are committed to constant learning and proactively provide academic and cultural support. 

POSITION OVERVIEW: The Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) will work directly with students, teachers and parents to provide individual and group counseling, as well as link families to long-term counseling solutions and external support organizations. The LPC will meet weekly with their manager. He/she will provide support to all stakeholders to help the school achieve its mission to empower underserved students to achieve success in the nation’s most competitive high schools, top four-year colleges and universities, and to have the freedom to shape their futures and positively affect their communities.
 
The LPC will work to support the social and emotional well-being of our student population and will serve as a leader in the school community, supporting and equipping staff members with the skills they need to best support students.

The Counselor will work closely with students, teachers/staff, families and the community.

  • Guide individuals and groups of students and parents to plan, monitor, and manage a student’s own personal and social development
  • Create individualized treatment plan of service for each student served based on diagnostic measures and needs of classroom
  • Provide social and emotional learning support for students on a daily basis at the Tier 1, 2, and 3 levels; this may include performing CPI techniques on student
  • Plan and provide Tier 1 and 2 services in the form of guidance lessons, lunch bunch, setting up mentoring programs, supporting morning meetings, etc.
  • Maintain necessary documentation of services to students and families
  • Provide teachers with consultation and support their work with students
  • Lead professional development for staff members and provide strategies for how to best support students
  • Promote strong relationships and problem solving between teachers and parents
  • Consult with parents, school personnel, and other community members to help them increase the effectiveness of student education and promote student success.
  • Speak with parents of students who are struggling throughout the day – by phone or in person
  • Provide regular contact with parents to monitor and support progress towards development goals
  • Host parenting classes if interest is high; classes will focus on needs identified by parents such as discipline, homework help, teaching responsibility, bedtime routines, talking about puberty, etc.
  • Coordinate people and other resources in the school, home, and community to promote student success. Use an effective process when referring students, parents, and/or others to special programs and services.
  • Participate on school staff teams to develop policies and practices to prevent school violence and support opportunities for team-building and collaboration among students
  • Create professional learning goals each year; willing to offer support to and receive constructive feedback from colleagues in order to create a professional working atmosphere that is conducive to change and improvement
  • Help shape and develop a region-wide atmosphere that best suits the needs of our students, teachers, and families 

Qualifications

  • Valid Texas licensure as a Licensed Professional Counselor by the Texas Board of Examiners of Professional Counseling
  • Demonstrated knowledge of counseling skills with individuals, groups, and families
  • Knowledge for working with an underserved population
  • Highly collaborative, resourceful and flexible
  • Sensitive and responsive to the needs of others
  • Hired candidate may be expected to complete CPI (Crisis Prevention Intervention) training paid for by the region.

Compensation and Benefits

In addition to a competitive salary scale, a part of KIPP Texas’ competitive benefits options, KIPP offers all employees an $0 HMO plan for the employee only.
