Job Description

The role of the Interventionist will work directly with all grade students who have struggled to display a mastery of the TEKS, as practiced within their classroom on a daily basis.  

Duties include:

Establish an effective LPAC.

  • Establish, facilitate, prepare and maintain documentation for an LPAC (committee) that meets quarterly and makes decisions/recommendations on identification, accommodations, progress, and reclassifying related to EL students, professional development needs related to serving ELs, etc.

  • Recruit & train the staff and parents who serve on the LPAC

  • Responsible for preparing and delivering annual report to parents on student progress and LPAC decisions

Identification & Records of ELs.

  • Lead the campus to ensure ELs are accurately identified upon entry and that pertinent info is recorded in Power school.

  • Ensure the school maintains accurate and up to date rosters of ELs in classrooms and ensure regional systems are implemented with fidelity and in a timely manner.

Work closely with the ARD Committee, RTI committees, SPED teachers, 504 committee, dyslexia program, etc. to coordinate services to dually serve EL students.

Ongoing sharing of data with LPAC, teachers, and leaders to monitor EL progress through the year.

  • Take a lead role in the implementation of state assessments and ensure that the school completes assessments of ELs with validity  as required during the year (LAS LINKS, TELPAS, STAAR with linguistic accommodations)

  • Ensure that data from standardized assessments used at KTX DFW (Interim Assessments, STEP, MAP, STAAR) as well as required EL assessments (LAS LINKS, TELPAS, IOWA) is analyzed and shared with the LPAC, school leaders, teachers, and regional leadership

  • Maintain locked inventory of campus testing materials (LAS LINKS, TELPAS testing materials) and needed supplies

Participate in a collaborative efforts with SLA (second language acquisition) components such as:

  • Collecting needed information from your assigned school to determine the need for an application for Bilingual exception & ESL waiver for the region

  • With operation staff participation compile demographic data and all data needed for PEIMS submissions, on the schedule that allows compliance with state requirements (parent permissions, parent denials, migrant or refugee status, etc.), and for TELPAS data submission.

  • Collect & provide campus EL info as needed related to Title III, PBMAS process, Campus Improvement Plans, etc.

Help schools provide excellent education to their EL students, with attention to linguistic, cognitive and affective needs.

  • Ensure priority beginner EL students are receiving linguistic accommodations and instructional needs by pulling or pushing in to execute intentional EL small groups utilizing a language intervention resource (LLI).

  • Participate in regional Sheltered Instruction training and then lead ongoing campus professional development on SI. The sessions will cover ELPS, sheltered instruction for ESL, interventions/accommodations/scaffolds for struggling ELs, Proficiency Level Descriptors (PLDs), and TELPAS trainings. 

Help teachers learn and use available EL supplemental resources and materials, and help compile school needs, priorities and recommendations for purchases of  EL supplemental resources

  • Possible coaching of teachers and leaders on serving their EL students effectively and sheltered instruction strategies.

  • Ensure linguistic accommodations that can be used on testing are also being used effectively in the classroom.

  • Work with school leaders and Regional ESL Program Manager to ensure lesson plans include language objectives and that instruction is planned to teach both the TEKS and the ELPS at appropriate levels for the students.

  • Participate in the school, campus, and regional teams and procedures for clear communication.

  • Meet bimonthly with the Regional ESL Program Manager and other ESL Leads to receive training, report on progress & status of various tasks, and prioritize tasks for the coming week, two weeks, and two months.

  • Meet with school leaders at least bi-monthly to review the ESL calendar, EL data, address challenges.

  • Participate in a quarterly sheltered instruction walkthrough on your assigned campus, with Regional ESL Program Manager, and at least one school leader.

  • Attend and participate in external meetings related to second language acquisition as recommended by school leaders or Regional ESL Program Manager.

Collaborate with the Regional ESL Coordinator in compiling and updating second language acquisition procedures, program needs, data, and recommendations for the EOY ESL Program Evaluation report to the Board.

Qualifications

Skills and Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited four-year college or university required

  • Valid Texas Teaching Certificate with required certification for subject and level assigned; including valid ESL supplemental certification, required.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of core subject area assigned

  • Spanish-speaking proficiency required

  • Two or more years of teaching experience required

  • Satisfactory outcome of a background check. Employees are responsible for a non-refundable fingerprinting fee (approximately $50.00)

  • Experience as an English as a Second Language teacher in elementary classrooms or in a related capacity in a traditionally underserved community for two or more years, preferred

  • Strong achievement results and documented growth with ESL students on goals, benchmarks, standardized tests, fluency measures and reading assessments (STEP, DRA, Fountas & Pinnell, etc.) preferred
