Job Description

JOB DESCRIPTION

KIPP Imani will open in the fall of 2022 in the Warrendale neighborhood on the west side of Detroit. Led by a seasoned founding school leader, KIPP Imani will launch with Kindergarten students SY 22-23 and add grades each year to eventually serve students in grades K-4.  The founding team at KIPP Imani will include Kindergarten Teachers, Kindergarten Co-Teachers, Diverse Learning Teachers, Paraprofessionals and Arts Teachers.KIPP Imani will also be supported by a robust operations team and student support team to ensure a strong foundation for the school’s founding and growth. 

In our founding year, our Assistant Principal will start in the Spring of 2022 and support our new school launch.  The Assistant Principal is a crucial leader of our school, able to  motivate and focus staff on student performance, to reach for increasingly high levels of student achievement,  effectively compel students, parents and faculty members even in challenging circumstances, and demonstrates the flexibility to accommodate multiple priorities and a strong work ethic to accommodate high level of responsibilities.  The ideal candidate for Assistant Principal will have both a successful track record of instructional leadership and managing others as well as a desire to develop into an effective Principal with KIPP Detroit as we grow.  This is a full-time position that will report to the Superintendent.   The ideal start date for this position is late-Spring to support founding planning, hiring, and start-up. 

RESPONSIBILITIES

Instructional Leadership Responsibilities

  • Model and support implementation of the school’s vision and goals 

  • Contribute to school-wide planning and prioritizes time to accomplish goals Motivate and focus staff on student performance to reach for increasingly high levels of student achievement

  • Model school culture in all interactions with students, families and faculty

  • Build own and direct reports’ instructional knowledge of standards, content and instructional methods 

  • Lead teachers in developing and executing high-quality, standards-based school curriculum and instructional content consistent with vision, mission and values of the primary school

  • Lead a grade level team in weekly collaborative lesson planning meetings

  • Work with teachers to align curricula and teaching practices to interim assessments and end of module assessments

  • Create model instructional materials to develop teachers and close gaps in planning

  • Work with the principal and peer leaders to develop tactical strategies to improve student academic performance

  • Analyze results for assignments, standardized tests, and other data points in order to target interventions that will ensure the academic success of all students

  • Plan and execute professional development opportunities that drive faculty to increasingly high levels of student achievement

  • Plan and execute summer teacher induction and professional development days.

Management Responsibilities

  • Manage peer leaders and the teachers

  • Conduct weekly one-on-one meetings with all direct reports

  • Conduct regular classroom observations and provide follow-up feedback during one-on-one meetings and in written form

  • Communicate teacher performance to the principal, highlighting teachers in need of additional coaching due to insufficient performance

  • Recognize and celebrate staff professional growth and success

  • Retain and develop top KIPP talent year over year

  • Develop emerging leaders with School Leader’s guidance 

Team Responsibilities

  • Model our commitment to anti-racism in our words and actions 

  • Respond to feedback from formal and informal evaluations completed by teachers and the principal

  • Receive and respond appropriately to feedback from students, parents and teammates

  • View feedback as a tool to improve and grow in all teacher responsibilities, and use it in this capacity

  • Actively pursue own professional development in areas that will have the greatest impact on student achievement

  • Participate in school-wide professional development, such as content team meetings and one-on-one coaching with manager

Qualifications

The minimum qualifications for Assistant Principal are:

  • Bachelor’s degree or better from an accredited university or college (required)

  • Active Michigan Teachers Certification or active teachers license that can be transferred to MI (required) 

  • Active Michigan School Administrators Credential or active teachers license that can be transferred to MI (strongly preferred) 

  • Four years or more of full-time teaching and/or leadership in an elementary environment 

  • Demonstrated strong academic results both in the classroom and through team leadership

  • A cleared Criminal Records Check.

  • All KIPP Detroit staff are required to provide documentation of full Covid-19 vaccination by or before 10/15/2021, unless approved for medical or religious exemption. (Updated 8/24/2021).   

The ideal qualifications for Assistant Principal are:

  • Aptitude at data analysis: ability to extract meaningful insights across school-wide data 

  • Knowledge of academic standards: expertise in what academic standards and state assessments require of students’ knowledge and skills to demonstrate mastery; able to translate student mastery requirements into instructional plans and strategies  

  • Skillful Instructional coaching: has a deep understanding of appropriate application and differentiation of high-leverage instructional strategies (e.g. make kids sweat, pacing, stretch it, etc.) based on comprehension of child development and pedagogy 

  • Strong judgment and stakeholder engagement 

  • Demonstrated resilience and achievement orientation
