KIPP Albany Community Public Charter Schools (KIPP Albany) is a network of high-performing public schools that has been committed to creating joyful, academically excellent schools in Albany since 2005.  KIPP Albany is affiliated with KIPP (Knowledge is Power Program) Public Schools, a national network of over 10,000 educators serving 160,000 students and alumni. Further regional growth is on the horizon with the Troy Prep K-12 schools planning to join the KIPP Albany network (new name TBD) at the start of the 2022-23 school year. Serving over 2,500 students in grades K-12 at seven schools across the Capital Region will allow increased curriculum offerings for students, professional development for staff, and enhanced family and community partnerships. 

Job Description

Position Overview

The Director of Teaching and Learning reports to the Chief Academic Officer. The Director of Teaching and Learning will assist in the design and implementation of KIPP Albany’s instructional approach. The instructional approach will focus on building the content and child development knowledge of teachers and leaders. In addition to building knowledge, the Director of Teaching and Learning will codify best practices in methods, drive the selection of rigorous, standards-aligned, and culturally relevant curriculum, and provide direction for how learning best occurs in schools and classrooms. Additionally, the Director of Teaching and Learning will support the development of instructional coaching skills for all leaders. All efforts driven by the Director of Teaching and Learning will be in service of an equitable, inclusive, rigorous, and diverse learning experience for all students. 

Duties and Responsibilities of the Director of Teaching and Learning include, but are not limited to:

  • People Management

    • Manage and support Directors of Math and Literacy

    • Provide professional development and coaching to directors and their teams

  • Content, Curriculum and Instructional Methods: 

    • Analyze and recommend research-based curriculum to support standards based approach to teaching and learning

    • Research, create and implement best practice collaboration and sharing in instructional methods that enhance teaching and learning

    • Collaborate with the Chief of Schools to ensure fidelity of implementation of curriculum, instruction, assessment, accountability, and instructional coaching

  • Assessments and Accountability: 

    • Create and implement instructional approach across all content areas with aligned scope and sequences and assessments

    • Collaborate with Director of Academic Data and Assessments Team to analyze all assessments and correlate student achievement to best in class teaching and learning practices

    • Collect and revise exemplar unit/module plans in core content areas for teachers and leaders

  • Professional Development: 

    • Create and implement professional development strands for teachers and teams on content, methods and curriculum related to all content areas

    • Create and implement professional development strands for leaders and teams on the instructional coaching teachers

    • Create and implement approach to catalog excellent teaching, planning, and practices through the collection of videos and artifacts 

 

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree (required)

  •  7+ years of education related experience

  • Possesses a deep commitment to both racial and educational equity; supports the building of an organization that reflects the community KIPP serves; holds self and others on team accountable for centering equity

  • Examines the impact of their identities, biases, assumptions, and behaviors on their power and privilege, interactions with others, work and leadership in the organization; able to recognize, immediately respond, and consistently remedy interpersonal and systemic bias and inequities

  • Demonstrated excellence in school leadership, including instructional coaching, leading professional development, and developing other leaders

  • Demonstrated proficiency in leading through change, executing on major initiatives, and leading cross-departmental work

  • Excellent relationship builder with demonstrated experience managing diverse stakeholders, leading change, and mobilizing others and creating champions to support an organizational mission

  • Demonstrated achievement in partnership development, including an ability to mobilize people and create champions to support an organizational mission

  • Ability to analyze and use qualitative and quantitative data on a regular basis to drive decision making; strong judgment
