Company Description

KIPP Metro Atlanta is part of the nationwide KIPP non-profit network of 255 college-preparatory, public charter schools educating more than 100,000 early childhood, elementary, middle, and high school students. KIPP Metro Atlanta currently operates eleven KIPP schools including four primary schools, five middle schools, one K-7 school, and one high school, as well as the KIPP Forward which supports alumni through college, career, and beyond.  

The regional support team provides financial and operational support and oversight to KIPP Metro Atlanta schools, develops instructional initiatives designed to strengthen the schools’ academic programs, and implements each school’s high school placement and alumni services through the KIPP Forward program.

Job Description

KIPP Metro Atlanta Schools is currently seeking a strategic and dynamic Managing Director of Regional Operations (MDRO). Reporting to the Chief Operating Officer, the MDO will be responsible for regional operations functions including technology, school nutrition, facilities, health services, security, student transportation, and insurance. As an operations leader within KIPP Metro Atlanta Schools, they will play an active role in designing and executing centrally led initiatives to implement systems and practices that enhance the organization’s efficiency and scalability.

As a Managing Director of Regional Operations your responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

Management and Leadership

  • Actively manages Directors of Technology, Facilities, School Nutrition, and Health& Safety as an on-call resource, thought-partner, problem solver, and coach.
  • Hold high standards for project management while empowering others to proactively and creatively problem-solve, and model versatility and collaboration for the organization
  • With great empathy, is a consistent champion and proud member of their team. Encourages participation from all members of the team in ways that feel most comfortable to their team, and seeks feedback and ideas from team members at all levels in operating as a leader

  • Thoughtfully considers the impact of decisions, and facilitates resolutions that protect the organization’s interests and prioritizes student needs when conflict or disagreements arise
  • Annually authors performance evaluations, closely monitors progress relative to operational excellence metrics
  • Proactively identifies operational areas in need of improvement at the regional level and develops and implements large-scale improvements to systems and processes to improve efficiency in all key operational areas

Operations Support

  • School Operations
    • Regularly meets and collaborates with department leaders (Finance, Data, School Performance, Scholar Support, Human Resources, Talent, External Relations) to identify and work on operational efficiencies or improvement projects
    • Meet and collaborate with school based leaders to identify opportunities for organizational improvement
  • Technology
    • Oversee the management of all technology architecture and systems
    • Oversee the management of desktop support for all schools and campuses
    • In collaboration with Director of Technology, prepare plan to scale technology infrastructure and support for growth
  • Health & Safety
    • Oversee the management of all health service programs, trainings and compliance
    • Ensure that all buildings and campuses are safe and secure for students and staff
  • Facilities and Security
    • Support School Directors of Operations in ensuring that all schools in the portfolio are safe, neat, clean, and fully operational at all times; actively partners with Managing Director of School Operations and school-based operations teams
    • Responsible for all lease and contract management related to facilities, janitorial services and building maintenance
    • Responsible for real estate acquisition, development and space planning
  • School Nutrition
    • Ensure all students and staff have tasty, healthy meals served in a timely manner
    • Ensure compliance with the National School Lunch Program
  • Student Transportation
    • Ensure all student bus riders arrive to school safely and on time
    • Responsible for student transportation contract

Strategic Growth

  • Advise Leadership Team on how to scale Regional Operations Functions as we grow
  • Develop and implement plans to support new and existing schools in all Regional Operations Functions

Budget and Finance

  • In partnership with Director of Finance, ensures that the budget for each department is managed effectively; actively participates in the annual budgeting process
  • Ensures that schools and departments collaborate on budgeting process and adhere to all fiscal policies and procedures

Other

  • Supports the work of the COO in identifying and developing network-wide system improvements to support KIPP Metro Atlanta Schools growth, creating more efficiencies while still allowing for freedom and innovation at the schools
  • Works on or manages special projects related to operations as they arise
  • Manages effective implementation of annual or biannual operational projects
  • All other duties as assigned

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree required, Master’s degree preferred
  • Minimum 10 years of work experience with 5 years of supervisory and management experience, preferably in a large, dynamic, mission-driven organization
  • Strong project and time management skills; ability to effectively backwards plan, manage multiple priorities with great attention to detail, and deliver consistent and timely results
  • Strong strategic and analytical skills with an aptitude for systems-building
  • Sense of humility, urgency, and customer service mindset
  • Strong ability to proactively solve problems and make decisions quickly
  • Team player with strong interpersonal and stakeholder management and relationship building skills
  • Ability to lead, influence, and hold others accountable to high standards of academic and operational excellence
  • Ability to be calm under pressure, especially in difficult conversations with parents and staff
  • Excellent organizational, verbal, and written communication skills
  • Excellent computer skills, including Microsoft Word, Microsoft Power Point and Microsoft Excel
