Job Description

Position Overview:

KIPP Nashville is committed to providing a college preparatory humanities education to all students. The Director of Elementary Humanities plays a critical role in realizing this mission by providing schools with high-quality curriculum support and guidance that are vertically aligned to our middle school curriculum, ensuring that every KIPP Nashville elementary student is ready to matriculate into rigorous middle school humanities courses.  The Director of Elementary Humanities also provides professional development and coaching to regional instructional leaders and teachers, as well as leads the regional elementary academic team in professional development related to humanities and instruction. The Director of Elementary Humanities will report directly to the Head of Schools and directly manage the Manager of Elementary Humanities.

 

Key Responsibilities:

Responsibilities of the Director of Elementary Humanities include, but are not limited to:

 

Change Management: 

  • Ensure training, instruction and coaching are aligned with the research-based best practices for literacy instruction

  • Identify areas of growth and opportunity for literacy program and progress toward goals, build investment from school leaders and teachers around the what and how of student achievement. 

  • Analyze and communicate progress toward literacy goals over our 3-year rollout plan, ensuring school leaders understand their role in driving achievement. 

 

Curriculum Frameworks:

  • Create and support in 3-year rollout plan for regional supports for K-2 Phonics and Word Study, including management of Elementary Humanities Manager.

  • Build and enhance K-4 regional curriculum with scope and sequences, units, and daily aims and culminating tasks: 

    • K-4 Shared Reading 

    • K-4 Writing  

    • K-2 Half-Year Social Studies Course 

  • Drive K-4 unit launch and lesson study structures, including internalization templates, schedules and protocols for the above. 

  • Determine and execute regional supports for K-2 Small Group Reading, including:  

    • mCLASS Analysis direction and coaching, including templates, timelines and action step modeling

    • Creation of and alignment to a shared Small Group Reading rubric  



 

Assessment and Data-Driven Instruction (DDI):

  • Support Manager of Elementary Humanities in driving K-4 literacy assessment cycles at the regional level including establishing timelines, communicating school scheduling and instructional goals, and providing SL or AP support in scoring/norming. 

  • Support Manager of Elementary Humanities in vetting assessments, author assessments, and/or project manage assessment writing for K-4 literacy.

  • Prepare data for, and participate in, weekly regional Academic Progress Monitoring meetings

 

Professional Development

  • Design and lead PD for Academic Team to create and ensure alignment, build leader toolkit, and drive progress toward academic goals

  • Create and facilitate summer PD to launch shared vision and build teacher toolkit 

  • Create and facilitate shared PD calendar during the year to support teacher execution 

  • Design and lead facilitation of Instructional Rounds as the calendar allows for APs and Ps 

  • Co-observe with APs and/or Manager of Elementary humanities at least monthly to drive alignment of execution

Qualifications

Desired Qualifications:

  • At least three years of experience of team leadership and/or instructional coaching

  • At least one to two years experience in curriculum support, such as assessment writing and/or scope and sequence management.

  • Demonstrated ability to drive student success

  • Strong project management skills, organizational skills and attention to detail

  • Strong communication and relationship-building skills

  • Demonstrated passion for the mission, vision and values of KIPP Nashville; comfort and willingness to actively participate in the KIPP Nashville community

  • Bachelor’s degree required

Additional Information

Salary is competitive, commensurate with experience, and includes benefits. This position is exempt and will follow a 12-month administrative schedule.
