Organizational Overview

In 2020, KIPP Eastern North Carolina (KIPP ENC) and KIPP Charlotte took the first steps to begin to merge to form KIPP North Carolina Public Schools (KIPP NC). Starting in July of 2021, KIPP NC will be a network of eight high-performing, college-preparatory public charter schools providing an academically rigorous and joyous school experience to more than 3,500 students in grades K-12 in Charlotte, Durham, Gaston, and Halifax. Additionally, KIPP NC will support several thousand alumni on their journey to and through high school, college, and career.   

KIPP NC will build on a rich tradition of academic excellence and relentless fight for social justice present from the founding of both KIPP ENC and KIPP Charlotte. KIPP ENC is the second oldest KIPP region in the nation. In its 20 years of operation, KIPP ENC has been a cornerstone for students and families in rural Gaston and Halifax, operating two primary schools, two middle schools, and one high school. Over the past five years, it grew to serve even more students by opening up a middle school in Durham, an urban center in the center part of the state. KIPP Charlotte, which grew out of the strong traditions and academics of KIPP ENC, has supported students and families for the past 13 years, operating one primary school and one middle school in the largest city in North Carolina.

KIPP North Carolina will build upon the successes and experiences of KIPP ENC and KIPP Charlotte to provide inclusive school environments and an educational program that will enable our students to lead full lives and equip graduates to be future leaders and agents of change in North Carolina and beyond. KIPP NC also will continue to engage in direct, anti-racist work, and it will contribute meaningfully to the dismantling of structures of inequality within our organization, schools, and classrooms. Job Description

ROLE OVERVIEW

Reporting to the Director of Facilities and Real Estate and accountable to the Statewide Central Office, the Multi-Campus Evening Custodial Manager role oversees the cleanliness of the campus to ensure the seamless operations of our high-performing schools. The Multi-Campus Evening Custodial Manager manages the evening custodians at multiple campuses and manages day custodians during the summer and breaks. He or she serves as a member of the campuses’ Custodial, Facilities, and Operations Teams, ensures that the schools’ cleanliness meets high standards of facilities excellence, and enables instructional teams to focus on teaching and learning. He or she will play an integral role in the campuses’ operations, and will work alongside other departments and stakeholders to create efficiencies that benefit students and learning. 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Maintain a safe working environment for KIPP Gaston and KIPP Halifax students and staff.

  • Maintain a high standard of facilities excellence inside and outside of buildings, including identifying problem areas, addressing emergencies as they arise, and proactively problem-solving with key leadership members.

  • Ensure day-to-day custodial maintenance issues and emergencies are addressed quickly and effectively.

  • Oversee and manage the Custodians during evening shifts at both campuses, including meeting weekly with the teams and inspecting and evaluating performance during the course of the year.

  • Manage custodial staff to a high standard of excellence.

  • Partner with your Supervisor, the Director of Facilities & Real Estate, and the school Directors of Operations to ensure the facilities’ cleanliness and safety are maintained.

  • Formally check-in weekly with Supervisor, the Director of Facilities & Real Estate. At this meeting you should run the meeting: inform the Supervisor of facility issues, equipment failures, areas of concern, budget issues, and propose solutions. 

  • Check-in with the team in a weekly meeting and informal one-on-ones with each team member weekly. 

  • Establish communication mechanisms with the custodial teams and school Directors of Operations so there is unity and joint-problem-solving across teams. 

  • Send out via email a weekly note to Directors of Operations and Supervisor about upcoming projects, issues, and resolutions.

  • Create effective schedules and responsibilities lists that maximize employee time and results.

  • Track time off and secure coverage for staff outages.

  • Order and maintain a sufficient supply inventory so there are no shortages, while keeping a small inventory in stock to help prevent waste or careless use, etc. For large one-time purchases, review purchases with a Supervisor.

  • Monitor the custodial supply and custodial pay expense budgets, with support from the Director of Facilities & Real Estate.

  • Review timesheets with custodians, and submit payroll twice monthly following protocol outlined by the Finance Team at the Central Office and/or Director of Facilities & Real Estate.

  • Work with the HR Director on any issues in Proliant, the time and labor tracking system.

  • When necessary, perform general cleaning duties, including sweeping and mopping floors, cleaning windows, cleaning up spills and accidents, cleaning and restocking student and faculty restrooms, cleaning drinking fountains and white boards, removing trash, dusting, cleaning and disinfecting door knobs and student desks, picking up trash on school grounds, around flower beds, and in the parking lot. 

  • When necessary, perform small handyman duties, including replacing light bulbs, hanging cork boards, painting, carpentry work, helping deliver large packages from the reception area to the appropriate faculty member, watering flower beds, pulling weeds, etc. as needed

  • When necessary, move and rearrange furniture, including setting up and breaking down cafeteria tables before and after breakfast and lunch, helping set up for special events or other school use.

  • Respond to emergencies with a sense of urgency.

  • Be on call for off-hours emergency response, with a separate stipend for security response.

  • Feel a sense of pride and facility ownership.

  • Bring a positive, can-do, and reassuring attitude every day, building trust with all members of the school community.

  • Maintain strong communication and relationships with schools and operations departments, including the Child Nutrition, Transportation, and School-based Teams.

Perform other job-related duties as assigned and requested by the Supervisor, Director of School Operations, or School Leader..

Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Minimum 3 to 7 years of work experience, preferably in custodial management  

  • Demonstrated management and leadership skills (e.g. >2 years managing a team or many large projects)

  • Strong project and time management skills; ability to juggle multiple priorities with great attention to detail, and deliver consistent and timely results

  • Sense of humility, customer service mindset, and shows urgency and the ability to proactively solve problems and make decisions quickly

  • Team player with strong interpersonal and stakeholder management and relationship building skills

  • Ability to lead, influence, and hold others accountable to high standards of facilities excellence

  • Ability to stay calm under pressure, especially in facilities emergencies

  • Consistent and responsive communication skills

  • Desire to continuously learn and increase effectiveness as a professional

COMPENSATION

This role is commensurate with experience and is a salaried, full-time role. A benefits package will be provided.
