KIPP NYC Public Schools is a non-profit network of free, public charter schools that prepares students for success in college and life. In 1995 we started our first middle school, KIPP Academy, in The Bronx.  Our goal was to graduate students with the strength of character and academic abilities needed to succeed in high school, college and beyond – and in so doing, to prove what is possible for all students.  Today, our New York City network is comprised of seven elementary schools, seven middle schools, one high school, and KIPP Through College and Career, a comprehensive support program for our alumni. KIPP NYC Public Schools currently serves more than 8,000 students and alumni and has a staff of more than 700. KIPP NYC is continuing to grow and will be opening two new middle schools and an elementary school in August 2021!

Job Description

Position Overview

The KIPP NYC Food Services is a vital program that oversees the food programs for our KIPP NYC schools at three locations in the Bronx. We are committed to food justice and to serving delicious and scratch-made nutritious food to our school community with a food is love philosophy. The Line Cook will report directly to the Head Chef on site to prepare and serve scratch-made breakfast, lunch, and snack for the students and staff. This position is ideal for anyone with culinary experience and a passion for our mission to provide all students and families with a high quality educational environment.  This position will abide by the strictest standards of physical and food safety, freshness, and sanitation.

General Duties and Responsibilities, include but are not limited to: 

  • Support the Head Chef and Sous Chef in all aspects of food production, for daily meal preparation and scheduled catered events outside regular school day hours 
  • Prep and prepare products according to recipes, ensuring quality, taste, and aesthetic presentation of all prepared items
  • Maintain inventory and assist with ordering, FIFO focused, using data and production records
  • Maintain cleanliness and comply with food sanitation requirements by properly handling food and ensuring correct storage as well as proper care and maintenance of all equipment
  • Maintain excellent standards of hygiene and comply with department dress code

Qualifications

  • Previous kitchen experience required, large-scale cooking experience a plus. Food Handler’s certificate required 
  • Knowledge of and ability to use a commercial kitchen and its equipment, including fundamental understanding of food safety, food preparation, and sanitation practices
  • Ability to exert moderate physical effort required in a kitchen, including but not limited to standing, carrying, bending, stretching, stooping, pulling, pushing, lifting of weights up to 50 lbs
  • Meticulous attention to detail with an ability to produce high-quality work in a dynamic, fast-paced environment
  • Demonstrated passion for and a commitment to the KIPP mission for high-quality public education and the character traits we value: zest, grit, self-control, hope, love, social intelligence, gratitude, and a sense of humor
